Skills Ontario announces 2017 qualifying results

With the Skills Ontario Competition just weeks away, 500 students competed at eight Ontario colleges in qualifying competitions for the 2017 Skills Ontario Competition on April 1.

These Skills Ontario Qualifying Competitions were held for six of the most popular contests at the secondary-school level: 2D Character Animation, Carpentry Individual, Culinary Arts, Small Powered Equipment, TV and Video Production and Welding.

Qualifying Competitions were held at Cambrian College, Canadore College, Confederation College, Fanshawe College, Georgian College, Humber College, Niagara College and St. Lawrence College.

Students representing the top three school boards in each contest at each of the eight qualifiers will advance to the Skills Ontario Competition, taking place May 1 to 3 at the Toronto Congress Centre.

At the Skills Ontario Competition, students compete for gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as monetary awards and job offers for select contests. Gold medallists are also eligible to go on to represent Ontario at the Skills Canada National Competition, May 31 to June 4 in Winnipeg.

"The Skills Ontario Competition is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the young talent in our province," said Gail Smyth, executive director at Skills Ontario, in a statement.

Featuring 68 skilled trades and technologies contests and over 2,400 competitors from elementary schools, high schools and colleges across Ontario, it is the largest skilled trades and technologies competition in Canada.
