Blackwing Coffee Bar flies in to help 26th annual Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music

Free-admission event Aug. 3, 4 and 5, 2018 in Cambridge ON

Cambridge – Blackwing Coffee Bar jumped in to help the 26th annual Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music on the Civic Holiday weekend.

A month ago, festival organizers learned that a key downtown music venue – the Kiwi Gastropub – had closed without warning. After announcing the 2018 Mill Race festival would go on with one fewer live music location, Blackwing’s owner called to offer the bar as a replacement performance area Aug. 3, 4 and 5, 2018.

“We saw the post on Facebook and knew this was an opportunity for us to help the community and let everyone know we want to be involved in community events,” said Katherine Chiles, who also owns Death Valley’s Little Brother in Waterloo.

Chiles opened Blackwing in April at 135 George St. S. – just across the Grand River from the Mill Race Amphitheatre, where the festival was born in 1993. Along with coffee, Blackwing also offers beer, wine and food throughout the festival. Blackwing will stay open late to 10 p.m. on Sunday to host musicians.

“This will be our first live music event at Blackwing and we think the uniqueness of the Folk Festival is an amazing way to start. We are very excited to be participating with all the other amazing venues in the city,” she said.

Blackwing’s eagerness to participate in Mill Race festival is heartening for the volunteer-run event, said founder and artistic director Brad McEwen.

‘We are very pleased to be able to include Blackwing Coffee Bar as a venue for the 2018 Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music. This is a wonderful new addition to Cambridge,” he said.

The free-admission festival in downtown Cambridge. Nineteen local and international performers are in the lineup, along with children’s performers and traditional English Morris Folk Dancers. Stages will be located around City Hall on Dickson Street; in the Mill Race Park amphitheatre, at Water Street and Parkhill Road; inside 13 Food & Beverage, at Water and Main streets; and inside Blackwing.
