Region launches Smart Waterloo Region campaign hoping to win

The Region will host three launch events in Cambridge, Kitchener and Elmira to encourage participation and garner support for winning the national Smart Cities Challenge – a competition worth $50 million.

Waterloo region has already been shortlisted as one of five cities competing for the title. “A smart city combines data and technologies to improve government services and citizen welfare – we are focusing on children and youth,” said Matthew Chandy, Smart Waterloo Region Lead. “To win we need to be the best community for kids in Canada.”

Children and youth are crucial stakeholders in a thriving community. That’s why Smart Waterloo Region (SWR) is inviting children and youth as well as parents, tech partners, organizations and community members to come to a launch event to share ideas. For those who can’t attend, visit to give input or get involved in future events.

SWR is partnering with UNICEF Canada to launch its smart city challenge on the national day of the child.
