Spectrum Academy expands education pilot program for autistic children

Founded in 1980, Ontario’s longest operating private special education school expand pilot program

This Friday, February 15, 2019 Kitchener's St. Jude’s School, after two years of conducting a pilot program wil announce it's expansion of Spectrum Academy. Amy Fee, MPP and Regional Chair Karen Redman will be announcing the official opening and expansion of Spectrum Academy, Ontario’s first full day, education & therapy integrated, school for autistic children. Spectrum Academy’s two-year pilot is a primary class – ages 5 to 7.

Beginning September 2019, Spectrum Academy:

• will add a junior class – ages 8 to 10
• and an intermediate class – ages 10 to 13
• Each Spectrum class will have two trained and experienced special education
teachers who have been trained in IBI (Intensive Behaviour Intervention) and
ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) therapies;
• Each Spectrum class will accommodate a maximum of 3 or 4 students;
• Each Spectrum class will be animal friendly;
• Each Spectrum class will be designed to be both therapeutic and educational;

In addition to the teachers/therapists, Spectrum Academy has a consulting psychologist, Doctor Katherine Spere. Guiding Spectrum Academy is founder Fred Gore, a Special Educational Specialist, founder and Director of St. Jude’s School and Scholars’ Hall. Fred Gore is also the recipient of Ontario’s Community Action Award for his decades of service to children with learning execptionalities;

As Spectrum Academy expands, the services of an integrated team: a social worker, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist and a physio therapist, will be added;

Also unique to Spectrum Academy students will be the integration into both St. Jude’s School and eventually Scholars’ Hall.
