Physical distancing measures may have put a moratorium on summer events, but that has not stopped local restaurants and breweries from banding together for a common charitable cause.
Friday, June 12th would have marked the 07th annual Waterloo Regional Tacofest, a fundraiser that sees restaurants and breweries from across Waterloo Region and beyond compete for the approval of judges and attendees alike. Though the traditional event may be postponed for the season, several local businesses haven’t given up on the opportunity to support Community Support Connections, a not-for-profit who services help local seniors and adults with different abilities live with independence and dignity.
“Tacofest offers those of us in the restaurant business a chance to pay it forward to many of our community members that are deserving of great food and great service,” writes Laura Umbrio (photo), the General Manager of Proof Kitchen + Lounge in Waterloo. “[We are] honoured to be able to contribute to the meaningful community services being offered through Meals on Wheels.”
Proof will be offering a range of taco specials for pick-up and delivery on Friday, June 12th, with 50% of all sales going to support Community Support Connections’ Meals on Wheels program. Joining alongside them that evening is Swine & Vine Charcuterie in Kitchener, who will be donating a dollar per feature sold that night. In addition, Bingemans will be offering a Taco kit for two pick-up special on the following Saturday, June 13th.
In addition to the Taco order specials, Community Support Connections will be highlighting local restaurants, breweries, and other businesses throughout the week, showing their gratitude for supporting Tacofest over the years by supporting them, in turn, during this pandemic season.
“The amount of funding and awareness we have been able to raise to support our clients thanks to the contributions of local businesses over the years has been invaluable,” states Rosalind Horne, the Major Gifts and Engagement Lead at Community Support Connections. “We know the significant impact the pandemic has had on our local businesses, and want to encourage the community to support them, as they have so faithfully supported us.”
