To the Editor of Exchange Magazine:
I was disappointed to see a story published [on exchangemagazine.com] saying the University of Waterloo is unable to work with Canadian-owned companies, as it is incorrect. Waterloo’s rich and thriving ecosystem stems from multiple partnerships with leading global information and communications technology companies in Canada and internationally. Along with an established partnership with Huawei, Waterloo has continued to develop new partnerships to expand the depth and breadth of 5G research.
In 2017, Ciena announced that research with Waterloo was driving advancements in Internet connectivity. A new partnership with Cisco Canada to advance 5G technology followed by enhanced wireless service and new capabilities for cellular networks was announced in 2018.
In December, 2019 Canadian owned Rogers Communications announced a partnership with Waterloo to build Made-in-Canada 5G technology, advance 5G research in the Toronto-Waterloo tech corridor, and create the first 5G smart campus in central Canada. Waterloo’s strength in research and innovation is enriched by our corporate and industry partnerships in Canada and around the world.
