Annual Survey of Advertising and Related Services for 2004

Despite higher revenues along with an improved profit margin in 2004, the advertising and related services industry in Canada continues to face challenges that have kept a lid on growth.

The trend of multinational advertisers to use global advertising campaigns has resulted in decreased demand for Canadian creative content. At the same time, the rise of the Canadian dollar has reduced the industry's price-competitiveness internationally.

Revenue has also been siphoned off by increasing media costs, as well as by growth in forms of marketing outside the advertising industry, such as company Web sites and Internet search engines. Finally, the industry also had to contend with allegations surrounding the federal sponsorship program and the ensuing "Gomery Inquiry".

Firms in the advertising and related services industry earned operating revenues of $5.0 billion in 2004, up 5.5% from 2003. Although broad-based economic growth in 2004 boosted the industry across the country, much of the 2004 rise was merely a rebound from industry declines recorded in both 2002 (-1.9%) and 2003 (-3.3%). Indeed, after accounting for inflation, total industry revenues in 2004 were still below the level reached in 2001.

Advertising agencies, which accounted for 45% of total industry operating revenues, earned $2.2 billion in 2004, an increase of 3.4% over 2003. Operating revenues of the other more specialized advertising industries (such as public relations, display advertisers and flyer distributors) were up 7.3% to $2.8 billion.

Profit margins improved from 8.7% in 2003 to 10.2% in 2004 among advertising agencies, and from 5.8% to 6.7% in the remainder of the industry.

There were 11,900 establishments involved in advertising and related services in 2004, little changed from the previous year. Advertising agencies accounted for 5,300 of these establishments.

The bulk of industry revenue was generated in Ontario (57%) and Quebec (26%). Operating revenues in Ontario rose 5.9% in 2004, following a 1.9% decrease in 2003. In Quebec, operating revenues rose 3.7% in 2004 on the heels of a 4.5% decline the previous year.

Note: This survey covers establishments classified as Advertising and Related Services (5418) according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) during the reference year. It comprises establishments primarily engaged in: creating mass-media advertising or public relation campaigns; placing advertising in media for advertisers or advertising agencies; selling media time or space to advertisers or advertising agencies for media owners; creating and implementing indoor or outdoor display advertising campaigns; creating and implementing direct mail advertising campaigns; delivering (except by mail) advertising materials or samples; creating and implementing specialty advertising campaigns; providing related services, such as sign painting and lettering, welcoming services and window trimming services.

This industry does not include advertising sales by newspapers, magazines, radio, television or Internet, which accounts for the majority of the difference between results of this survey and calculations of total advertising spending in the Canadian economy.

Results from the 2004 Annual Survey of Advertising and Related Services are now available. These data provide information on the industry's revenue, expenditures, salaries and wages, profit margin, and the distributions of revenue earned by type of service and client base.

Punch Receives Third Consecutive Ontario Global Traders Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario – Punch Integrated Communications has received the Bronze Award for Innovation in Global Export at the Southwest Ontario Global Traders Awards presentation. Punch, a fast-growth communications agency located in Waterloo Region and specializing in loss prevention and safety programs, is advancing to the competition’s provincial awards on May 31. The Ontario Global Traders Awards are coordinated by the Trade and Investment Division of the Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

More than 70 percent of Punch’s revenues are in export sales, driven by the company’s unique market focus and methodology. In just a handful of years, the company has grown to become the #1 provider of internal communications programs in loss prevention and workplace safety for many of the world’s best-known retailers, including The Home Depot, Albertsons, Winn-Dixie, JCPenney, AutoZone, PetSmart, Kmart, Macy’s, TJ Maxx and Office Depot, among many others.

“Punch has been recognized by the Ontario Global Traders Awards for four of the past five years, and we are grateful for this honor,” said Ed Roszczka, Punch president and CEO. “Punch’s growth has been fueled by our research-driven, innovative communications approach in a targeted market niche, combined with an agency team that consistently delivers outstanding client service. Punch is growing rapidly, and we don’t intend to slow down.”

AdFarm Ranked Canada’s Third Best Place to Work

Calgary, AB – Agricultural marketing and communications company, AdFarm, was ranked #3 in the Canadian Business magazine’s 2006 list of the “Best Workplaces in Canada”. AdFarm was the only communications agency and the only agricultural business to receive this special recognition.

The Canadian list follows the same methodology developed by the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, used by Fortune and the Financial Times to compile similar company rankings. Full details on the 2006 Best Workplaces in Canada list are in the April 10, 2006 issue of Canadian Business magazine.

“The advertising and communications business is totally dependent on the talents and commitments of quality people,” says AdFarm CEO, Kim McConnell. “Creating a unique working environment is extremely important to our business success but also to the enjoyment and fulfillment we receive during our working hours. Being ranked the #3 company in Canada is an award all AdFarmers take a great deal of pride in receiving.”

AdFarm staff was part of more than 20,000 employees across Canada who participated in the “Best Workplaces in Canada” survey. The selection process was based on two criteria – an employee survey and an external review of organizational culture. Two-thirds of the score came from employee responses to a Trust Index survey, ranking the company on credibility, fairness, respect, pride and camaraderie. The remaining third involved an in-depth review of company culture including an evaluation of HR policies and procedures.

Ladybug Teknologies Unveils Innovative Technology to Drive its Alcohol Awareness Program BAQ Tracker™

Makes the Science of Alcohol Toxicology Accessible to the Public

Cambridge —Ladybug Teknologies Inc., architect of an innovative alcohol awareness program called Know Your AQTM (Alcohol Quotient), announced April 20 that it has developed a groundbreaking new technology to serve as the foundation for its program. Participants of Know Your AQ will be among the first to experience Ladybug’s state-of-the-art technology, called BAQ Tracker (Blood-Alcohol Quotient).

BAQ Tracker is designed to:

give the public unprecedented access to the science of alcohol and its personal effects on the body be an educational tool that presents the complex science of alcohol toxicology in an easy to understand format convert toxicological data into confidential, anonymous consumption profiles, personalized for groups or individuals

“There is a noticeable absence of technology within the field of social change and, in particular, within the realm of alcohol misuse. As a 7.5 billion dollar problem annually for Canadians, alcohol misuse requires a shift in paradigm,” said Sherry Colbourne, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ladybug Teknologies. “Don’t drink and drive messaging has been tremendously successful and has been all but adopted as a social norm. However, if we are to make any further impact on the cost of alcohol misuse, we need to adopt a more broad-brush approach. Ladybug’s BAQ Tracker technology makes the complex science of alcohol toxicology understandable to the public and empowers individuals to make informed choices about alcohol.”

When Ladybug’s Know Your AQ program is delivered as a training program, self-service package or event service, BAQ Tracker acts as the repository for participant data. Commissioned by Ladybug Teknologies, Apex Systems Consulting developed this solution to collect demographic information and Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) readings via Psion Teklogix’ NETBOOK PRO. Designed for advanced data collection, the NETBOOK PRO is a unique, high-performance clamshell mobile computer that combines the virtues of the PDA with the benefits of a laptop. Using the NETBOOK PRO enables BAQ Tracker to automate the record keeping of BAC readings and manage participant data.

Upon completion of an event or training program, data in the BAQ Tracker system is synchronized with a central database via the Internet. Using secure access credentials and a confidential password, program participants can log into the Know Your AQ portal to view their specific consumption profile and gain real-time access to the scientists, researchers and legal specialists who support this field.

By combining world-class breath testing instrumentation, made by Dräger Safety, with the BAQ Tracker software, Ladybug Teknologies is able to provide users with a visual representation of how their body uniquely responds to alcohol, correlating the results to specific time parameters. Mapping alcohol consumption in this way enables Ladybug to run confidential consumption profiles and provides individuals with an objective assessment of the impact of alcohol intake.

“When reviewed in aggregate, the data collected through this technology will also provide the means to compile the first ever social study of real-time consumption patterns and trends,” said Doug Beirness, Senior Research Associate, Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. “Through voluntary breath sampling, Ladybug has devised an innovative way to collect and record consumption data while eliminating the risks associated with self reporting and the possibility for human error.”

The BAQ Tracker system relies on the most accurate and precise breath alcohol screening technology developed by Dräger Safety. The instrument’s fuel cell sensor is alcohol-specific, guaranteeing quick and precise measurement results. Used by the vast majority of Canada’s law enforcement agencies, Dräger’s breath alcohol screening devices are approved by both the Canadian and U.S. Governments.

Ladybug Teknologies will be present at the 19th annual International Association for Chemical Testing (IACT) Conference. The event will take place at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Anaheim, California, April 23 - 27, 2006.

Aquent Marketing Staffing Survey Results Find That 57% of Fortune 500 Corporate Marketing Departments Plan on Hiring Additional Marketers in 2006

CHICAGO- Internet Marketing is the Number One Area Corporate Marketing Departments' are Planning to Spend More Money On.

Aquent Marketing Staffing announced the recent findings of its "2006 Spending & Staffing Trends for Corporate Marketing Departments" study. Aquent surveyed over 1,700 marketing professionals at Fortune 500 companies across the country and Canada to gain insight into what areas of marketing Fortune 500 companies were planning to increase spending on in 2006 along with their staffing needs.

Compared to Aquent's 2005 findings, hiring has increased by 5 percent this year. "With more companies hiring, Aquent has seen a significant rise in its temp-to-perm solution, Talent Bridge," said Sean Bisceglia, president of Aquent Marketing Staffing. "Talent Bridge allows companies to work with a marketer on a "try before you buy" basis without adding head count for the first three months. That way hiring managers can evaluate performance, productivity, and cultural fit before making a permanent and costly commitment."

Aquent places over 1,000 experienced marketing professionals per year within leading Fortune 500 companies on an interim basis. Today, more than 20 percent of Aquent's interim marketers are going from temp-to-perm, and the number keeps growing.

Additionally, the survey found that there will be an increased focus on Internet marketing in 2006, with more than 50 percent of companies planning to increase spending in this area. Spending in branding and advertising follow closely behind, while brand mangers and project managers are the top two positions corporate marketing departments are looking to fill.

Aquent's survey also found that with the economy and job market picking up, along with the talk of Baby Boomers and the impending labor shortage, 59 percent of companies are concerned about employee retention and 78 percent believe employee turnover will be a challenge over the next five years.

Specialized design services 2004

Specialized design firms generated $2.4 billion in operating revenues in 2004, up 11% from the previous year. The double-digit growth rate, not seen since 2000, exceeded the cumulative growth of the preceding three-year period (from 2001 to 2003). The increase in 2004 was fuelled by firms in Ontario.

Growth was particularly strong in Ontario, while Quebec experienced a minor setback and British Columbia and Alberta recorded moderate increases. Ontario had the largest market share of revenues at 57%, followed by Quebec (20%), British Columbia (11%) and Alberta (8%).

The operating profit margin for the industry group improved, but its rate of increase remained below 12%, the previous five-year average rate.

The relative size of industries in the group changed little from the previous year. Firms in graphic design, the largest industry of the group, continued to represent one half of total operating revenues. Interior design firms generated one-quarter of operating revenues and the remaining quarter came from industrial design, landscape architecture, and other design services.

All industries in the group posted revenue increases in 2004. The growth rates were relatively higher for landscape architecture (+17%) and interior design (+14%), whereas industrial design (+6%) grew at only half the group average rate, following a dramatic improvement in the previous year.

Continuing the trend in recent years, the share of revenues from provision of full-service design dropped in favour of design consulting services. Provision of design services accounted for 42% of the group's operating revenues in 2004, compared to 46% in 2003, while design consulting stood at 29% of revenues, compared to 26% in the previous year.

Businesses are the primary customers for design services. In 2004, more than two-thirds of the operating revenues were generated from clients in the business sector. In graphic design, four out of every five dollars were earned from the business sector. However, the secondary source of revenue varies within the group. Households and individuals were the secondary source of revenues in interior design, while governments occupied the second rank in landscape architecture, and foreign clients were the second largest purchasers of industrial design services.

Exports dropped to 8% of revenues, compared to 10% in 2003. Four out of every five export dollars came from the United States. The industrial design services industry, which has the highest historical export intensity within the group, saw its exports shrink from 23% of revenues to 17%, losing much of the large gain obtained in the previous year.

The industry concentration slightly increased in 2004, but remained relatively low, as the top 20 largest firms represented less than 10% of the market share. Less than 5% of the firms employed 10 or more employees and non-employers accounted for 7 out of 10 business units, illustrating the importance of small firms in this industry. Business units providing specialized design services numbered 12,900 in 2004, up 1000 from the previous year.

Note: The annual survey of specialized design services covers firms classified to 54132 (Landscape Architectural Services) in addition to 5414 (Specialized Design Services) in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Group 5414 is composed of four sub-components of Interior Design (54141), Industrial Design (54142), Graphic Design (54143), and Other Specialized Design (54149).

Sony unveils world's smallest, lightest HD camcorder

Sony HDR-HC3 Handycam(R) camcorder supports HDV 1080i format and features easy-to-use operation and numerous advanced functions

TORONTO, Feb. 22 - Sony of Canada Ltd., Canada's leading supplier of electronic and computer products for consumers and business, today introduced the HDR-HC3 Handycam(R) camcorder, changing the notion that High- Definition (HD) video recording is for "advanced videographers only." Compared to its predecessor, this new HD camcorder is 26 percent more compact, packed with easy-to-use features and is more affordable.

"People are more savvy about HD television, have experienced its visual impact and now they want the same "wow factor" for their own home movies," said Samuel Yip, Product Manager, Camcorders, Audio Visual/Information Technology Group, Sony of Canada Ltd. "Sony has made great strides in creating the consumer HDV market over the past two years and now we are expanding it even further."

With its HDMI(TM) output, the Sony HD Handycam camcorder will complement the Company's marketshare-leading Grand WEGA rear projection and BRAVIA flat- panel LCD (liquid crystal display) televisions. As the de facto standard in the consumer electronics industry for transferring HD content, HDMI offers simple, one-cord connection to display devices so users can simply plug and play instead of struggling with multiple cables.

Home movies recorded with the latest HD Handycam camcorder will look every bit as good as pre-recorded HD video. The HD Handycam camcorder delivers superb HD picture quality and lighting detail on both video and digital still images.

The HD Handycam model features a professional-quality Carl Zeiss(R) Vario-Sonnar(R) T(*) lens and Sony's new ClearVid CMOS Sensor(TM) technology. This imager is engineered to boost picture resolution and clarity to deliver vivid colours and precise image detail. Combined with Sony's Enhanced Imaging Processor(TM), it provides new and fun-to-use functions.

The HD Handycam camcorder shoots 4.0-megapixel still images, stored on an optional Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) media card, for easy transfer between compatible devices.

It has a dual record function that allows users to shoot video and simultaneously capture 2.3 megapixel stills (16:9 widescreen ratio) in HD mode and 1.7-megapixel stills (4:3 ratio) in Standard-Definition (SD) mode. Users can also record slow motion video using the model's smooth slow record function, which plays back three seconds of video in 12 seconds smoothly -- ideal for analyzing a golf swing or tennis back-hand.

The HD Handycam model incorporates a number of convenient, easy-to-use features that are ideal for first-time camcorder users and those new to high- def recording.

"Our latest model is a perfect solution for families who are currently using mini-DV camcorders and want to step up to HD," said Mr. Yip. The camcorder is able to record and play back both HD and SD video on conventional miniDV media.

It has a user-assignable dial that can be set to the most regularly-used options for greater ease of recording. It includes Sony's distinctive Easy Handycam button that, when pressed, locks out advanced features on the camcorder, leaving only the buttons essential for recording on the menu. For quick framing and easy image sharing, the camcorder has a 2.7-inch touch panel SwivelScreen(TM) LCD viewfinder featuring Sony's new Clear Photo LCD plus(TM) technology.

The LCD produces bright images with high-contrast that are easy to view in virtually any environment and at any angle.
Other helpful features include Super SteadyShot(R) image stabilization, a built-in microphone for excellent audio quality, an intelligent built-in flash for well-exposed still images, and a supplied InfoLithium(R) P battery for up to 90 minutes of continuous recording.
The HD Handycam camcorder will be available in mid-April at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,999.99. A full line of accessories is available, including lights, lenses, microphones, InfoLithium(R) batteries, chargers and cables.

Book Review
JWT Worldwide Releases Top Confucian Consumer Sightings Understanding and Embracing China's Different Worldview Is Main Theme of Billions: Selling to the New Chinese Consumer, by JWT's Tom Doctoroff

NEW YORK - In China, brands used inside the home are local and cheap, whereas brands used outside the home are foreign and expensive; a powerful woman decorates her $1,000 mobile phone with Hello Kitty stickers; and the smartest guy in the class is the coolest guy in the class. These are just some of the interesting facts about the Middle Kingdom released today by JWT, the fourth largest advertising agency in the world and the largest in the U.S. "Twelve Facts About the Confucian Consumer" was compiled by JWT to coincide with the January 2006 publication of Billions: Selling to the New Chinese Consumer, by Tom Doctoroff, CEO of JWT Greater China and Northeast Asia Area Director. Billions, to be published by Palgrave Macmillan, cracks the supposedly indecipherable code of marketing to the New Chinese Consumer-all 1.3 billion of them. In the book, Doctoroff illuminates the critical role of Chinese culture in shaping buying decisions and translates consumer insights into strategies for long-term success in the Middle Kingdom. "The only way for multinational companies to succeed in China is to fully embrace the fundamentally different world view that China represents. Outsiders can only penetrate the market by understanding its dramatically different cultural and operational landscape," said Doctoroff.

Twelve Facts about the Confucian Consumer

1. Chinese people put pineapple, not pepperoni, on pizza. All foods are
divided into "heaty" and "cooling" foods, and the two must be balanced at all
times. Pizza is heaty, so the pineapple cools it down.

2. In China, "fresh" means "alive." Daoism is still a force in the
People's Republic. Daoists believe our natural state is the only "balanced"
state. Therefore, Chinese have a deep aversion to manmade preservatives. For that matter, Chinese women get prickly about chemicals in shampoo.

3. Brands used inside the home are locally produced and cheaply made.
Brands shown publicly are foreign made and expensive. In a Confucian society, social status is an investment, so consumers will pay a huge premium for mobile phones and high-end alcohol. At home, price sensitivity is extreme.
There are no designer bedspreads. Victoria's Secret doesn't stand a chance.

4. Chinese people never have dinner parties. The home is a place of refuge,
escape, and, every once in a while, self-expression. Comfort is key. But where you live is paramount, which is why apartment blocks sport such names as "The Gathering of All Heroes Under Heaven" and "Tycoon Court."

5. More than 80 percent of Shanghai couples now get married with an
engagement ring, up from practically zero a couple of years ago. In an unsafe
world, men have to demonstrate -- not talk about -- their love. Women are
suspicious of guys who say, "I love you."

6. A powerful woman decorates her $1,000 mobile phone with Hello Kitty
stickers because she wants to be soft on the outside and like iron on the
inside.

7. In China, feminine beauty is a tool that moves a woman forward.
Cosmetic surgery is all the rage because it helps a young woman land a job,
not a man.

8. Soy sauce can save lives. The thinking is as follows: "If my food
tastes good, my family will eat more. If my family eats more, they'll get more
nutrition. If they get more nutrition, no one will get sick. If no one gets
sick, no one will lose a job. If no one loses a job, the family will be in
harmony. If the family is in harmony, a new generation can be born." Unlike
anywhere else in the world, great taste ladders to good health.

9. In 1995, the Chinese middle class virtually didn't exist. By 2005,
there were approximately 100 million individuals in China with incomes in
excess of $4,000 (even in expensive coastal cities, purchasing parity power is
at least 2.5 versus the U.S.). By 2010, there will probably be 200 million
middle-class folk.

10. The smartest guy in the class is the coolest guy in the class. Girls
really and truly go for brains, not bodies. In a dog-eat-dog, hierarchical
Confucian world, intelligence is the ultimate weapon. Health clubs will always
be niche.

11. Chinese people squirrel away 40 percent of their income, despite
making, on average, less than a tenth of U.S. per capita income. The Chinese
believe the fickle hand of fate can turn against them at any time. And there's
virtually no safety net.

12. Germs are the ultimate evil. A Chinese mother's primary role is to
protect the child from harm and shield the family from invasion. That's why
air conditioners, washing machines, soap, food, dishwashers, and television
sets all scream, "germ-free."

In writing Billions, Doctoroff pulled from the stores of knowledge he has gained over his 11 years working for JWT in Greater China. For the past three years, he has served as JWT's Greater China CEO and Northeast Asia Area Director. Under his stewardship, JWT Northeast Asia, which includes China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Korea, has emerged as one of the region's most integrated, creatively dynamic, and strategically insightful networks. In 2003, Doctoroff was named Regional Agency Head of the Year by the region's leading marketing and advertising publication, Media magazine, and in 2004, he received the prestigious Magnolia Government Award in recognition of his contributions to Shanghai's economic development. Doctoroff arrived in Greater China in 1994 as a Regional Business Director; based in Hong Kong, he managed several of JWT's largest multinational clients across Asia Pacific, including Pepsi, Kraft, and Citibank. Four years later, he moved to Shanghai to become Managing Director there, a role he held until he assumed his current position in 2002.

New Toronto Legislation Could Mean More Taxes on Housing and More Urban Sprawl

TORONTO - The Toronto Real Estate Board is concerned that homebuyers could be faced with new costs as a result of the new powers for the City of Toronto proposed by the provincial government.

Under Bill 53, Stronger City of Toronto for a Stronger Ontario Act, the City of Toronto would be given general authority to levy taxes with certain limitations. Land transfer tax is not included as one of those limitations, meaning that this option would be open to Toronto City Council if the legislation is passed.

"Most people agree that property taxes can't sustain the level of investment needed for things like transit and infrastructure. But the answer is not a municipal land transfer tax. That's just another tax on property," said John Meehan, President of the Toronto Real Estate Board.

Homebuyers already face a substantial provincial land transfer tax when they purchase a home. This tax is calculated as a percentage of the purchase price of a property and is payable in full when a homebuyer takes possession of the property.

The current provincial land transfer tax on an average Toronto home is approximately $3,900. This is intended to pay for real estate related administrative costs faced by the Province for things such as land registry services.

"It's not clear what, if any, costs related to property transactions that a Toronto land transfer tax would be funding," Meehan said. "Notwithstanding issues of fairness, a Toronto land transfer tax would be counter-productive. Many people are already choosing to live outside of the City because they simply cannot afford to live here. A Toronto land transfer tax would make this situation even worse, which in turn would mean less growth in Toronto's taxable assessment base and more urban sprawl resulting in increased commuter gridlock, pollution and frustration levels," Meehan added.

Toronto REALTORS are passionate about their work. They adhere to a strict code of ethics and share a state-of-the-art Multiple Listing Service designed exclusively for REALTORS. Serving nearly 23,000 Members in the Greater Toronto Area, the Toronto Real Estate Board is Canada's largest real estate board.

Steam Whistle stays the course with a singular focus

TORONTO The oft-asked question “When will you launch another beer?” has been answered today by Steam Whistle Brewing, Ontario’s fastest-growing, premium Independent Brewer, with one word: “Never!”. Steam Whistle is embracing a business strategy that few companies anywhere have the courage to take on: to remain a single brand producer.

Founding partners, Cam Heaps and Greg Taylor, take to the airwaves today with new radio advertising committing Steam Whistle to live by this bold promise. The commercial sums up this focused approach with the statement:

Do one thing really, really well

The brewing industry has seen plenty of splashy launches and often short-lived success in “new” categories over the years. There was Dry beer, Extra Dry beer, Cold-filtered beer, Ice beer, Strong beer, “Bottled Draft” beer, Low-carb Beer, Flavoured beer, “Spiked” beer, Strong beer, Low-alcohol beer and more recently Clear beer, as brewing giants struggled to deliver the ‘next big thing’ to thirsty beer drinkers and shareholders alike. Steam Whistle has avoided the temptation to launch new products in their five-year history. “Being an independent company we have the patience to operate this way. We are not fixated on quarterly performance so we do not live and die by “big ideas” or drastic cost cutting measures. We are entrepreneurs who love coming to work to make great beer and are devoted to this brand for the long haul. We simply want to brew one beer and do it well,” says Greg Taylor, co-founder and operating partner in Steam Whistle.

Ted Matthews, Brand Coach to many Fortune 500 companies [www.instinctbrandequity.com] uses Steam Whistle Brewing as an example of a company that has got it right by focusing in on quality in their product. “Here is a brand that has been built through careful attention to detail that reinforces their retro-quality positioning. The 12-packs are a handsome presentation with a beautiful briefcase handle that actually works and feels solid in the hand. Their bottles, which are 30% heavier than the industry norm, feel substantial. The graphics are beautiful raised-letter printing right on the glass. The closure is the old style pry-off cap that presents a rounded, soft on the mouth opening. The beer tastes good. Customers talk about the quality of Steam Whistle unaided [and] they defend the premium price as understandable and worth it. All of this perception [customers] have drawn from their actual experience with the product.”

“We don’t believe in taking short-cuts”, says Cam Heaps, 31-year old President of the company. “Our commitment to quality ingredients and time-honoured brewing techniques ensures our position as Canada’s Premium Pilsner.” Steam Whistle’s singular focus is to make only one beer of exceptional quality that Canadians can be proud of. They brew their Premium Pilsner using only four, all natural ingredients (of the 108 ingredients, chemicals and additives allowed in beer by Food Canada). They are dedicated to traditional craftsmanship, which does not include pasteurization or high-gravity brewing (brewing a high alcohol, condensed beer which is diluted with carbonated water at bottling, standard practice at most of the world’s commercial breweries).

Steam Whistle Pilsner, voted Ontario’s Best, is sold through most Beer Stores and LCBO outlets in the province, and in hundreds of Licensed Establishments. Their brewery is housed in Toronto’s historic John St. Roundhouse, just south of the CN Tower and is open daily for tours.

Companies Must Re-Think How They Value Customers

Companies looking to cut back on training and investment in Customer Service Call Centers will face serious financial consequences. A groundbreaking research study, recently undertaken by Ernan Roman Direct Marketing, has uncovered startling new insights into the world of customer service. The goal of the study is to understand how customers’ attitudes toward a company are influenced by their experience calling Customer Care Centers. The results could have a profound effect on the way American companies conduct business.

The majority of recent Customer Call Center experiences have not been positive. In fact, two thirds (66 percent) report negative or neutral experiences. If a customer has a negative experience calling a Customer Care Center, 95 percent perceive the company negatively. This perception can be extremely damaging to profits, as the likelihood for repeat purchasing declines by 86 percent. Additionally, 83 percent will be unlikely to recommend the company to others. These figures indicate that the business world needs to re-think how they value customer relationships.

“My passion is to change the way American companies treat their customers,” says Ernan Roman, president of Ernan Roman Direct Marketing and the co-author of Opt-In Marketing: Increasing Sales Exponentially with Consensual Marketing. “By fundamentally changing how they respect and value the relationship with customers, they will achieve a significant increase in customer loyalty and an exponential increase in revenue.”

Customers have forced a change in the way they wish to be treated and successful companies will have to adapt to meet their needs. “This puts the burden back on the marketer,” says Roman. “If marketers wish to attract and keep customers, they must learn their needs and deliver value per the requirements of those individuals! This applies not only to customer’s experiences with Customer Care Centers, this applies to all customer touch points.”

Innovators like IBM and Hewlett-Packard have seen significant increases in response and revenue after employing Roman’s Consensual Marketing Opt-In Process. IBM and Hewlett-Packard found success by engaging customers in consensual relationships where customers are engaged in highly personalized communications based on the person’s individual preferences and needs. “Truly understanding the needs of your customers is the key to this process,” says Roman. “Customers and prospects quickly see the difference when they are treated in this manner and the exponential increase in response and revenue prove it.”

It is clear that there needs to be a serious change. When given the opportunity, people “opt-out” of the marketing process in droves. As the overwhelming popularity of the Do Not Call Registry illustrated, people are sick and tired of being marketing to. “The chasm between marketers and customers has never been greater,” says Roman. “Marketers need to come up with new strategies to engage an overly cynical public. The days of spray and pray marketing are ending quickly.”

Developed by Roman, the Consensual Marketing Opt-In Process is designed to help companies build beneficial relationships between companies and their publics. “They tell us what they want, when they want it, and how they want to get it,” says Roman. “The customers allow themselves to be contacted with the expectation that the company will provide meaningful value in return.” The communication may come in the form of direct mail, a well-placed phone call or a highly-personalized e-newsletter.

“The Opt-In Marketing Process may change the very face of business,” says Roman. “It is vital for all organizations to be familiar with its principles.” Along with IBM and HP, Roman also counts the United States Postal Service, Microsoft and Golden Rule Insurance among his clients. These principles aren’t only for the big companies, though. These techniques can also be applied successfully to smaller mid-sized organizations.

By ignoring the wants and needs of their customers, American companies risk losing customer loyalty and repeat business. The burden has shifted to the marketers and the time for change is now. “Opt-in marketing simply puts the power back in the hands of the people,” says Roman. “It is time that we listened to them.”

5 KEYS TO MAXIMIZING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF YOUR COMPANY WEBSITE

Websites can be a key marketing tool for almost every type of business. From flash pages and music to video and pop up cursor messages, website design and structure options are limitless. But have too many entrepreneurs and CEOs lost site of the fundamental marketing mission websites serve? Have bells and whistles replaced message and branding?

According to marketing and branding guru Allan Gorman, the answer is too often … yes.

“The bottom line -- websites should serve as a way of introducing, supporting and building loyalty for your business,” says Gorman, author of the new book, Briefs for Building Better Brands. “As the Internet’s influence on society has increased exponentially, a website can no longer be just a corporate brochure or shopping flyer as it used to be in the ‘old days.’ It must be a tool to brand your product or service.”

Gorman offers tips for companies to achieve maximum marketing value from their websites:

First (page) impressions matter most – Branding begins before the first page of your site loads. Does a visitor have to wait too long for your flash animations to load? Are the clips useful for telling your story, or just gratuitous pieces of art that say: ‘See how cool I am?’ Is the first page designed to load efficiently for all connection speeds?

Ease of use equates to a pleasant visiting experience … and marketing effectiveness – We’ve all visited websites which seemed impossible to navigate and which bred instant confusion. Does your website use all the trendiest fashion, styles and web tools at the expense of legibility and clarity? Or is it pleasant to look at, easy to understand and easy to navigate?

Give people a reason to return – Website ‘stickiness’ is important, but giving people a reason to want to return is even more essential. See if you can create relevant, interesting and involving self-assessments, puzzles, surveys or tests that will make their experience educational and interactive -- and that relate to your products and/or services.

Provide essential information for your customer – This sounds simple enough, but take some time to visit various websites and you’ll find accessing basic information isn’t always easy. Regardless of the type of business, every site should include: a clear explanation of your product or service, highlights that make it unique, success stories/case studies, endorsements, and contact/order information.

When designing a website, pretend your giving a website visitor a tour of your office or plant to impress them -- What do you think they'd want to see or know? In what order does it best make sense to present this information? How can you keep them interested and make it fun?

“The power of the web as a psychologically powerful influencer is often overlooked by businesses,” adds Gorman. “A company website should be consistent with all marketing materials, and focus on introducing, supporting and building loyalty for your brand.”

Book as Business Card: Growing Trend in Business Marketing and Self-Publishing

As the boom in self-publishing books continues, a growing trend has emerged: using a book as business card.

Entrepreneurs and business owners of all types are finding that publishing a book in their area of expertise can be an effective marketing tool; replacing or supplementing traditional tactics, brochures and collateral materials. The philosophy is simple: Having an attractive, informative, well-designed book to provide prospective customers or clients greatly enhances credibility, establishes the business owner as an expert, and helps to expand awareness of a company. Furthermore, with proper promotion and publicity, an additional revenue stream can potentially be established from sales of a book.

a national book promotion agency, currently promotes several books written by business owners; each using their book for a variety of purposes. Barry Nadell, the head of a national background check company, published “Sleuthing 101: Background Checks and the Law.” The book has afforded Nadell the opportunity to spread awareness of his company through reviews and feature stories in trade and business publications.

Allan Gorman, owner of a market leadership and brand development firm, published “Briefs for Building Better Brands,” sells the book at speaking engagements and presentations, and has also received widespread coverage of the book – and his business – through media coverage and interviews. Roland Manarin, president of a major investment firm, is in the process of publishing a book, but has enjoyed extensive pre-release exposure in major newspapers and broadcast media, laying the foundation for a major launch of his forthcoming book.

Business leaders publishing books also greatly enhances the credibility needed to secure media exposure. Many media outlets prefer to use experts who have written a book on their subject, because it provides the requisite credibility to use the author as an expert source for stories and interviews.

The multiple benefits of publishing a book are leading more and more business owners to consider this non-traditional marketing tool. Smith Publicity has seen a steady increase in the number of clients following this route, and the authors/experts the agency has promoted have found the process to be equally, or more effective, than traditional marketing tactics.
