For-hire motor carriers of freight, all carriers for Second quarter 2006
There were an estimated 3,336 for-hire trucking companies based in Canada with annual revenues of $1 million or more in the second quarter of 2006, almost unchanged from the same quarter in 2005.
Operating revenues totalled $7.1 billion, up 7.5% from the second quarter of 2005. Operating expenses reached $6.5 billion, up 8.8% from the same period in 2005.
Both average operating revenues and expenses were up, 7.4% for revenues and 8.7% for expenses, in the second quarter compared with the same quarter of 2005. Average expenses were just under $2 million compared to $1.8 million in the same period in 2005. The increase in expenses was driven essentially by higher payments to owners and operators, combined with smaller increases in other expenses and fuel expenses. The operating ratio (operating expenses divided by operating revenues) deteriorated slightly to 0.93 from 0.92 in the second quarter of 2005.
For-hire trucking transportation revenues from domestic movements increased by 9.7% to $4.6 billion from $4.2 billion registered one year ago; revenues from international movements increased by 3.2% to $2.6 billion from $2.1 billion a year ago.

Rent, Border Service, Bilaterals Among Top Priorities for Canadian Competitiveness in 2007, Canada's Airports Say
Airports welcome back legislators with Five-Point Competitive Plan
OTTAWA - The Canadian Airports Council today welcomed back federal legislators with a call for the elimination of airport rent, more resources for border services and the negotiation of more liberalized bilateral air service agreements as three of five top priorities the government needs to tackle this year to promote world competitiveness for the nation's airports.
Consistent with the Five-Point Competitive plan the CAC presented before
the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance in the fall, the CAC also
is seeking an increase in funds for the Airports Capital Assistance Program
and a change in regulation to allow for Arrivals Duty Free.
"Just last November, Transport Minister Cannon made a commitment to
consider Canada's position on the world stage in the field of aviation with
the announcement of a new international air policy," said CAC President and
CEO Jim Facette. "Today, as we start a new year for the government, we call on
the minister to honour that air policy commitment through more liberalized
agreements, as well as to go further and address other hurdles to Canadian
competitiveness such as the imposition of rent and the resource deficit at
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
Canada stands out among western nations in charging airports rent.
Canada's airports will pay nearly $290 million this year in rent tax - a heavy
financial burden for which Canada's airports receive nothing in return. The
rent tax also places Canadian airports at a competitive disadvantage to U.S.
airports and other modes of transportation. It serves as yoke on the ability
of an airport, and the community it serves, to further invest and expand on
trade opportunities.
Meanwhile, a resource strain at Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is
threatening the ability of Canadian communities to take advantage of
international opportunities for tourism and trade. Travellers at many of
Canada's airports sometimes have experienced long wait times. Meanwhile some
smaller airports in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and elsewhere in the country have
been unable to secure the customs resources required for proposed new
international air routes into their communities.
Canada's airports contend that both issues must be addressed if
communities are to truly take advantage of international air service
opportunities increasingly available to them. New air service brings
competition and valuable tourism and trade links to Canadian communities,
which is why Canada's airports also are encouraging the federal government to
aggressively move on its pledge of last November to negotiate more liberalized
air service agreements with countries of the world.
"For Canada's airports, 2006 was a year in which the federal government
made some very positive and refreshing commitments to improve the
competitiveness of Canada in the world," said Mr. Facette. "In 2007, it is
time to act on these commitments, negotiate new liberalized air agreements,
resolve the CBSA resource strain that threatens the ability of communities to
make use of these agreements, and once and for all eliminate the competitive
disadvantage of rent."
A shortage of funds for small airport infrastructure through the Airports
Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) also negatively impact airport
competitiveness with other modes of transportation, such as highways.
Meanwhile a ban on arrivals duty free in Canada means Canadian duty free
operators are losing out to overseas airports and air carriers by not being
able to sell duty free products to travellers to Canada arriving from
overseas.

relaxation and striking contemporary design elements.
Air Canada and most Star Alliance partner flights will be gated at
Terminal 1. Some regional flights will continue to be gated at the East
Satellite Terminal, although these passengers will also transit through Pier F
at Terminal 1 prior to boarding or after disembarking from their flights.

this summer, it will offer daily non-stop service from Toronto to Beijing,

Railway carloadings for November 2006
Canada's railways carried slightly less freight in November than they did the month before.Railway carloadings totalled 24.7 million metric tonnes in November, down 0.3% from the revised 24.8 million metric tonnes loaded in October.
Tonnage in the non-intermodal component was virtually unchanged. Loadings in the intermodal part fell 3.6%, typical for containerized goods, which always show a downward trend from October into January.
Freight coming from the United States, either destined for or passing through Canada, fell 3.0% from October to 2.5 million metric tonnes. Despite this slight drop, tonnage from the United States was the highest reported for the month of November since 1999.
On a commodity basis, an ongoing demand for primary goods has supported loadings of most metallic ores and concentrates.
The biggest gain occurred in iron ore shipments, which rose by about 400,000 metric tonnes, equivalent to a 14.2% increase from October.
November wheat loadings totalled just over 2 million metric tonnes, up 10.3% from October. It was the fourth consecutive monthly increase for wheat loadings.
On the other hand, loadings related to the manufacturing sector were somewhat weaker. Combined loadings of parts and accessories for motor vehicles, automobiles and minivans, as well as motor vehicles intended to carry freight, have shown levels well below previous year averages.
In fact, combined loadings of these three transportation groups during 7 of the previous 11 months in 2006 were at their lowest levels since 1999. While loadings in November showed some sign of recovery, loadings in September and October registered the steepest monthly year-over-year declines compared with 2005. Reductions exceeded 20% for these two months, equivalent to a decline of more than 4,500 carloads.
On a year-over-year-basis, non-intermodal tonnage remained the same as November 2005 as did intermodal loadings. Traffic received from the United States rose 2.2%.

stringent 2010 U.S. emissions standards - today. That's great news for our
Heavy Duty customers - 80 per cent of whom choose the diesel option."
In 2006, Dodge Ram sales in Canada reached an all-time high of
39,837 units. The current Dodge Ram lineup includes 1500, 2500 and 3500 models
in three cab configurations: Regular, Quad Cab and Mega Cab. Engine options on
Dodge Ram include the Magnum 3.7-litre V6, 4.7-litre, 4.7-litre flex-fuel V8,
5.7-litre HEMI(R) V8 and the new Cummins turbo diesel.
Dodge Ram Heavy Duty trucks' long-standing relationship with Cummins was
established in 1988 and continues to thrive with new, more powerful, more
efficient and cleaner turbo diesel engines. In Indiana late last year, Cummins
produced the 1.5-millionth diesel engine for the Dodge Ram.
6.7-litre Cummins Turbo Diesel Offers Improved Emissions and Durability
In addition to the NOx absorber and the self-cleaning DPF, the 6.7-litre
turbo diesel engine includes other technologies to improve fuel efficiency and
reduce unburned hydrocarbons. These technologies include:
<<
- A cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system combines with a
uniquely designed piston combustion bowl and a high-flow,
electronically-controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT(TM)),
matching boost pressure with the engine's performance needs to reduce
emissions and improve drivability
- Within the exhaust system, a self-cleaning DPF and an oxidation
catalyst reduces particulate matter by a factor of 10
- A new closed crankcase ventilation system eliminates crankcase fumes
and oil carry-over, a common problem with past diesels
>>
As durable as it is powerful, the 6.7-litre Cummins turbo diesel has
life-to-major overhaul intervals of 560,000 kilometres, providing more than a
160,000-kilometre advantage over the competition.
Dodge Ram 1500 Light Duty Diesel Model
Armed with new Cummins clean-diesel technology, Dodge will introduce an
all-new turbo diesel engine in its light duty Ram pickup trucks after 2009.
The new engine will provide a dramatic increase in low-end torque, up to a
30-per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 20-per cent reduction in
C0(2) emissions when compared to an equivalent gasoline engine.
"Our all-new Cummins engine will offer future Dodge Ram 1500 customers
the ultimate in terms of fuel economy, refinement, reliability and
durability," said LaSorda. "It's another example of the Chrysler Group
bringing new clean, quiet diesel technology to the marketplace."
The Dodge Ram's new clean diesel engine will meet benchmark low levels of
emissions, including U.S. 50-state emissions standards for 2010.
"We are pleased to build upon our 18-year partnership and brand franchise
with the Chrysler Group by providing our new light-duty diesel-powered engine
for use in the Dodge Ram 1500," said Tim Solso, Cummins Chairman and CEO. "We
know customers for this product will demand high performance. We also know
that we need to be extremely good at fuel efficiency and emissions control in
order to succeed in this market. Cummins will use its technology leadership to
meet all of those criteria, while providing the driving public with an
exciting new diesel engine alternative for the popular Dodge Ram series."
The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel
The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will be available in Canada in March and
offers class-leading torque, outstanding towing capacity (3,357 Kilograms),
and class-leading driving range of approximately 725 kilometres. Clean diesel
technology also improves fuel economy by up to 30 per cent and has up to
20 per cent fewer CO(2) emissions.
The 3.0-litre V6 CRD engine will be available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee
Laredo, Limited and Overland 4x4 models. The Canadian Manufacturer's Suggested
Retail Price (MSRP) for the Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will be announced at a
later date.
"The Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel will offer excellent performance,
increased fuel economy, class-leading torque, towing and a driving range of
725 kilometres - roughly the equivalent of driving from Toronto to Quebec
City," said Judy Wheeler, Vice President, Marketing, DaimlerChrysler Canada.
"The Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel is so smooth and powerful, it will forever
change Canadian's perception of diesel power."
The new 3.0-litre V-6 CRD engine, built by Mercedes-Benz, produces 215 hp
(160 kW) @ 3,800 rpm and 376 lb.-ft. torque (510 N-m) @ 1,600-2,800 rpm and
gets an estimated fuel economy of 31 mpg on the highway (9.0 L/100km) for 4x4
models. Most recently, the engine earned a spot on "Ward's 10 Best Engines"
list.
The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee is also available with a flex-fuel capable
4.7-litre SOHC V8 engine, which gives customers the ability to use a fuel with
an 85 per cent concentration of ethanol (E85) in their vehicles. Flex-fuel
vehicles support renewable sources of fuel and reduce emissions. The 2007 Jeep
Grand Cherokee continues Chrysler Group's commitment to alternative fuels and
technology.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will be manufactured at the Jefferson North
Assembly Plant in Detroit. The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will be fueled with B5
(5 per cent) biodiesel at the assembly plant to help increase the awareness of
biodiesel. The 3.0-litre V-6 CRD engine is built at the Mercedes-Benz Berlin
Marienfelde Plant in Berlin, Germany.
Chrysler Group Diesel-Powered Models Outside of North America
Between 2003 and 2007, the Chrysler Group will triple the number of
diesel offerings outside North America. Of the estimated 20 vehicles
available, 12 or more will have the option for a diesel powertrain (up from
four in 2003).
Diesel versions of numerous Chrysler Group vehicles continue to be
popular world wide, including the Chrysler 300C, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Jeep
Grand Cherokee and Jeep Compass, as well as the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber and
2007 Jeep Wrangler. More than 60 per cent of the Chrysler Group vehicles sold
in Western Europe are diesel powered.

The exterior design
The first generation of the TT has become a milestone in automotive
design, an icon. The design adhered to pure geometric lines, embodying a
functional purity and austerity harking back to the Bauhaus style of the
1920s. The core motifs were the circle and the curves of the roof line, and
front and rear overhangs. This timeless architecture guaranteed that the Audi
TT was an eminently recognizable presence out on the roads, and simultaneously
gave the development of the entire brand decisive momentum.
Audi has lovingly retained and stylishly enhanced this genetic code. On
the new TT the geometric shapes merge fluidly into a uniform whole. A low,
narrow greenhouse is supported by slim pillars sitting on broad, powerful
shoulders. The base body beneath is compact in looks, conveying a feeling of
confidence and strength. The convex and concave curves of its surfaces lend it
the character of an athletic sculpture straining forward.
The front end has gained greater expressiveness and resolve. The
single-frame radiator grille serves as its defining element. The large air
inlets hint at the potential of the engines, and the sharply cut, sloping
headlights emphasise the mature appearance of the car. The rear styling,
characteristic of the TT, conveys power and dynamism through its wide wheel
arches. The lights generate a three-dimensional effect thanks to their visual
depth. The powerful exhaust tailpipes, the wide diffuser and the centered rear
fog light echo the world of motorsport.
When the new Audi TT is stationary, its electrically operated rear
spoiler is visible only as an unobtrusive lip. When the car reaches a speed of
120km/h, the spoiler is extended in a two-dimensional curve motion, thereby
improving the down force on the rear axle. When the car's speed drops below
80km/h again, the spoiler automatically retracts. The underbody design also
helps to reduce lift.
The interior
The original TT was itself one of the few coupes on the market to offer
genuine sports car design in its interior. In the new model, too, the fluid
dynamism of the exterior is echoed in the interior.
A sweeping line provides a transition between the interior trim of the
door and the instrument panel. It embodies the classic circles motif of the TT
in a number of ways, such as in the three center air vents. All lines converge
in the instrument cluster, with its two large scales for speed and revs. New
features include a large digital speedometer in the display of the driver
information system.
The new standard-spec sport steering wheel fits snugly in the hands. Its
solid rim, trimmed in high-grade leather, is flattened at the bottom similar
to the Le Mans quattro sports car study. The driver's and front passenger's
sports seats are fitted even lower down than in the predecessor model,
providing a truly sporty seating position allied to firm side restraint. Like
the steering column, they can of course be adjusted longitudinally and in
height, offering a perfect sporty seated position for every driver.

The Lexus LS 600hL makes its Canadian debut
Lexus unveils its most sophisticated flagship sedan at the Montréal
International Auto Show
MONTREAL- Lexus took the wraps off the luxury auto-maker's most sophisticated flagship vehicle, as the 2008 Lexus LS 600hL made its Canadian debut at the Montréal International Auto Show on January 18, 2007. This hybrid luxury long-wheelbase sedan - scheduled to arrive in Canada in the spring - is the world's first vehicle to feature a full-hybrid V8 powertrain.
Powered by the world's most proven hybrid technology - the Lexus Hybrid
Drive - the LS 600hL is the industry's most advanced deployment of hybrid
power to date. This flagship luxury model features a 5.0 L V8 engine, coupled
to large, high-output electric motors and a newly designed large-capacity
battery pack. The result is performance on par with a V12 from a system that
achieves best-in-class V8 fuel efficiency while generating a fraction of the
emissions of a conventionally powered vehicle. The LS 600hL is expected to
achieve a Tier 2, Bin 3 emissions rating, meaning it will generate nearly
70 per cent fewer emissions than the cleanest of its competitors.
"It's fair to say that - to our knowledge - there is nothing on the road
or on the drawing board that comes close to delivering such a formerly
contradictory combination of jaw-dropping engine performance, fuel efficiency,
and low emissions," said Stuart Payne, Director responsible for Lexus in
Canada. "The LS 600hL is quite simply in a class by itself."
The Lexus Hybrid Drive is only the start of the story, as the LS 600hL
sets new benchmarks for luxury vehicle performance, style, safety and quality.
The LS hybrid features full-time all-wheel-drive and a newly-developed, dual
stage, electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission, for
impressive power and seamless acceleration.
Inside, the LS 600hL takes full advantage of the hybrid system's
reduction in noise, vibration and harshness to create one of the quietest
automobiles ever built - if not the quietest. This newest member of the Lexus
passenger car family benefits - inside and out - from our exclusive L-finesse
design philosophy. The LS hybrid shares the same bold, contemporary look
enjoyed by the Lexus LS 460, and interpreted on the Lexus IS, ES, and GS
models.
"The LS 600hL is a new icon for the Lexus brand - a state-of-the-art
image of style, technical advancement, and performance second to none," Mr.
Payne continued. "It's the perfect vehicle for Canadians ready to enjoy new
levels of performance, style and safety."
The Montréal Auto Show opens to the public January 19th, and runs until
the 28th, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal.

Canadian Automobile Association presents CAA Pyramid Award(TM) to 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Environmental Initiative award recognizes Camry Hybrid's affordability,
fuel efficiency, and potential to address climate change
MONTREAL - Toyota Canada Inc. is pleased to accept the 2007 CAA Pyramid Award(TM) for Environmental Initiatives, for the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Canadian Automobile Association presented the award to Toyota on January 18, 2007, at a special ceremony at the Montréal International Auto Show. "On behalf of everyone at Toyota, I'd like to thank the CAA for this important recognition," said Stephen Beatty, Managing Director at Toyota Canada Inc. "The Toyota Camry is the best selling car in North America, and with the launch of the Camry Hybrid, we have brought hybrid technology into the mainstream."
The Toyota Camry Hybrid went on sale in May, 2006 - the same month as its
newly designed conventionally powered cousin, the Toyota Camry.
"In 2006, Canadians purchased more than 2,100 Toyota Camry Hybrid
vehicles, representing 10 per cent of all Camrys sold since the hybrid
version's introduction," Mr. Beatty pointed out. "We think this is a
remarkable achievement for any hybrid vehicle in its first year of
production."
In presenting the award, the CAA cited the Camry Hybrid's affordability,
impressive fuel efficiency rating, and potential to contribute to positively
addressing climate change. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is a full gasoline-electric
hybrid passenger car, powered by Toyota's proven Hybrid Synergy Drive. The
vehicle seamlessly switches between its four-cylinder gasoline engine and its
high-torque electric motor, or uses both, as driving conditions warrant. The
result is V6-equivalent power and best in class fuel efficiency.

New motor vehicle sales Strong Ontario for November 2006
Strong demand for North American-built passenger cars drove new motor vehicle sales 3.0% higher in November, following two consecutive monthly declines. Consumers purchased 140,012 new vehicles, an increase of about 4,000 vehicles from the previous month. Almost 85% of this increase came from sales in Ontario.
Preliminary figures from the automotive industry indicate that sales continued to rebound in December as the number of new vehicles sold is estimated to have increased by approximately 5% over the month.

Despite fluctuations in the second half of the year, 2006 sales of new motor vehicles continued their relatively stable upward trend. Prior to 2006, sales showed sizable fluctuations throughout 2005 with the introduction and subsequent removal of dealer incentive programs.
Passenger car sales rebound
While both passenger car and truck sales increased in November, passenger cars outperformed trucks, accounting for almost 84% of the increase in total vehicles sold.
Passenger car sales advanced 5.0% to 71,536 units in November. In 2006, passenger car sales remained relatively flat, up until October when sales dropped 7.0%. November's sales gain mostly offset October's decline, resulting in a relatively flat trend.
North American-built passenger cars were the main driving force behind the national sales gain in November, climbing 8.9% to partially recoup the 11.8% plunge in October. Overseas-built car sales slipped 1.8% after gaining 2.7% in the previous month.
Truck sales (which include minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses) edged up 1.0% to 68,476 vehicles in November, the highest November sales on record and a second consecutive monthly increase. During the first half of 2006, truck sales were relatively stable, followed by a series of fluctuations in recent months.
Most of the national increase occurred in Ontario
In Ontario, new motor vehicle sales gained 7.0% in November to 52,627 units. This gain represents 84.5% of the national increase in November, offsetting declines in September and October. Despite recent instability, new motor vehicle sales have remained relatively stable in Ontario since the end of 2005.
Nearly all other provinces post gains
The number of new motor vehicles sold increased in eight provinces in November with Nova Scotia (+11.5%) experiencing the largest gain. New Brunswick (+10.6%) and Prince Edward Island (+8.5%) also registered strong sales during November.
In the West, Alberta (-3.7%) and British Columbia (-3.3%) were the only provinces to experience declines in November. New motor vehicle sales in both provinces started strong in the first half of the year, but have experienced a sales downturn in recent months.
Note to readers
All data in this release are seasonally adjusted.
Passenger cars include those used for personal and commercial purposes, such as taxis or rental cars. Trucks include minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses.
North American built new motor vehicles include vehicles manufactured or assembled in Canada, the United States or Mexico. All other new motor vehicles are considered to have been manufactured overseas.
For reasons of confidentiality, data for Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are included with those for British Columbia.
The New Motor Vehicle Sales Survey is compiled on the basis of figures obtained from motor vehicle manufacturers and importers. These results may vary from those obtained directly from auto dealers, due to possible differences in record keeping.

Canada's Airports Urge Transport Minister to Say "Yes" to Open Aviation Area Talks with Europe
Airports urge federal government to pursue historic Open Aviation Area
with Canada's second largest trading bloc and tourist source
OTTAWA - The Canadian Airports Council today welcomed the European Commission's proposal to open negotiations with Canada for the pursuit of an Open Aviation Area across the North Atlantic, and urged the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities to make concluding an agreement a priority for the coming months.
"Canada has signalled to the world that it is ready to embrace air
service liberalization with its new Blue Sky policy, and now the European
Union has answered our call," said Canadian Airports Council President and CEO
Jim Facette. "An Open Aviation Area with our second biggest trading bloc and
source of tourists is a natural next step and would be a boon for Canadian
communities and the travelling public by allowing for more choice and
competition."
The EU is Canada's second biggest trading partner after the U.S., with
some $70.1 billion in imports/exports. Traffic between Canada and the EU has
doubled between 2000 and 2005 and the EU is Canada's second largest source of
tourists. More than half of Canada's overseas tourists hail from Europe.
An Open Aviation Agreement with the European Union would replace
individual bilateral agreements between Canada and 17 individual members of
the 25-member EU and would pursue a regime consistent with the vision of
Canada's recently announced Blue Sky policy. As many of Canada's individual
bilateral agreements with individual EU members contain heavy restrictions, an
Open Aviation Agreement also would liberalize Canada's air regime with all of
the EU's 25 member states in one shot.
According to a study launched by the European Commission, the number of
passengers between the EU and Canada would increase from eight million now to
14 million by 2011. In addition, the EC estimates that an Open Aviation Area
would generate consumer benefits of at least $110 million through lower fares
and could create 3,700 jobs in the first year.
"Throughout 2006, the CAC called on the federal government to take a new
approach to international air policy, including a multi-lateral approach to
the EU," said Mr. Facette. "An Open Aviation Agreement with Europe would
remove outdated barriers on airlines from both sides to operate between Canada
and Europe, allowing travel companies to provide service that better responds
to market demand."
Canada's new Government welcomes European Commission interest in air agreement negotiations
OTTAWA - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today welcomed the European Commission's decision to present a negotiating mandate to its Council of Ministers for approval.
"I am pleased that the European Commission is eager to negotiate an air
agreement with Canada," said Minister Cannon. "The announcement made by the
European Commission today is a positive development and is consistent with
this government's recently announced Blue Sky policy, which commits to
actively pursue the negotiation of open agreements when it is in Canada's
overall interest."
The European Commission is the driving force in the European Union's
institutional system. Its main roles are to propose legislation, to administer
and implement Community policies, to enforce Community law and to negotiate
international agreements, mainly those relating to trade and cooperation.
Transport Canada has recently consulted stakeholders on the general theme
of a comprehensive agreement with the European Union. The analysis of comments
received is underway, and specific consultations on technical matters are also
planned.
Officials from the Government of Canada and the European Commission are
scheduled to meet at the end of February to hold preliminary discussions.
Transport Canada is committed to the development of a healthy and viable
air transportation industry through, among other things, the expansion of
international air services markets.
Canada currently has individual agreements with 17 of the 27 European
Union Member States. Under a Canada-European Union agreement, as envisaged by
the government, Canada's air transport relations with European Union Member
States would be governed by a single regime.

Lexus Unveils Two High-Performance Vehicles at the 2007 North American International Auto Show
DETROIT - Lexus unveiled the IS-F high-performance luxury sedan and the LF-A sports-car concept at a press conference today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The all-new 2008 IS-F high-performance luxury sedan will deliver more than 400 horsepower from a 5.0-litre V8 engine when it goes into production. The LF-A supercar concept is equipped with a V10 engine that produces more than 500 horsepower. Together, the two exciting new cars make a dramatic statement of Lexus performance.
The IS-F and LF-A are very different vehicles, yet they share the same
DNA, design philosophy, and heritage. Prominent in both vehicles, the "F"
designation was first conceived nearly 20 years ago with a project internally
coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." This was the original
code for what became the Lexus Division. The Circle-F designation further
evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept
developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come
to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the
normal engineering and development process.
"Lexus has long been perceived as the maker of mainstream luxury
vehicles, but the unveiling of the IS-F and LF-A not only changes this
perception, it also introduces a new Lexus marque," said Stuart Payne,
Director of Lexus in Canada. "The 'F' shared by both vehicles is the signature
for a new high-performance marque conceived by an engineering team that dared
to turn their dream of 'a Lexus like no other' into a reality."
IS-F Performance Sedan
----------------------
Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and
the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the proven
rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and
multi-link rear suspension. As well as the IS performs, Lexus engineers
demanded much more of the all-new IS-F. The result is a performance tuned
5.0- litre V8 engine, topped with specially engineered heads fed by a
two-stage intake system, that produces 400-plus horsepower and more than 350
ft.-lbs. of torque. The all-new IS-F is equipped with engine-oil and
transmission-fluid coolers for high-speed performance and a cylinder
head-scavenging oil pump for high g-force driving.
The IS-F engine is mated to the world's first eight-speed direct
sport-shift transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed
that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of
the torque converter in second through eighth gears. In Drive mode, the IS-F
transmission performs with great smoothness, and the torque converter allows
for great launch ability for fast standing-start acceleration that will
register a zero-to-60 time in less than 4.9 seconds.
This unique transmission also features an advanced Manual mode. A pair of
paddles located within a fingertip's reach behind the steering wheel enables
the driver to make ultra-fast up-shift gear changes within a tenth of a
second. Downshifts are accompanied by automated and incredibly precise
throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed.
The impressive acceleration achieved by the IS-F requires it be equipped
with heavy-duty Brembo brakes designed to the specifications of the Lexus
engineering team. Huge, 360.68mm (14.2-inch) perforated front discs are
gripped by rigid, powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while 345.44mm
(13.6- inch) rear perforated discs feature two-piston calipers. High-friction
brake pads are equipped on all four wheels. The brakes are finished with the
Lexus name displayed on the calipers, a first for a Lexus production vehicle.
The IS-F features custom-designed 482.6mm (19-inch) forged alloy wheels
as standard. The wheels were built to Lexus specifications by BBS and are
surrounded by high-performance sport tires.
The attention to performance also extends to a modified suspension that
lowers the entire car by more than a half-inch when compared to the base IS,
and one full inch when compared to IS models equipped with 18-inch wheels.
This specially modified suspension allows for an exciting and energetic drive,
whether on a race track or the streets.
The IS-F features an all-new three-mode version of Lexus' Vehicle
Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. In addition to the Normal mode,
the new VDIM features a Sport mode that allows the driver to push the car even
further before its braking-, throttle- and steering-control systems kick in.
The third VDIM system mode is off, which allows the driver to push the IS-F to
its ultimate level of handling performance.
The attention to performance is complemented by modified styling cues
that differentiate the IS-F from the standard IS. Lexus engineers provided the
IS-F with a dual-exhaust system and quad-tail pipes, wider front fenders, and
a larger grille and rear spoiler. Both the hood and lower intake were enlarged
to accommodate and cool the V8 engine.
Like the exterior, the interior of the IS-F receives unique styling with
aluminized composite trim and special surface treatments. The IP includes an
oil-temperature gauge and shift indicator-lights, while the "F" logo is
showcased on the steering wheel and rear-center console.
In addition to the usual Lexus standards of comfort and convenience, the
interior of the IS-F features specially shaped and trimmed seats, which hold
the driver comfortably and securely in place. The special sport seats are
available in black or a unique high-contrast white and black trim.
"The intent of creating the IS-F was not to be a competitor to other
performance-sport sedans," said Payne. "Rather, the goal was to create a true
performance sedan in a uniquely Lexus way-one that is totally authentic with a
unique interpretation of raw driving thrill at all speeds and provides a whole
new definition of 'usable power.'" The IS-F will arrive at Lexus dealerships
in early 2008.
LF-A Sports Car Concept
-----------------------
The LF-A sports-car concept was originally shown at the 2005 NAIAS to
express a bold new direction in styling for the Lexus brand. The goals for the
new LF-A are no different than they were with the original concept: To build a
supercar with world-class performance that is uniquely Lexus.
As with all new Lexus vehicles, the styling of the LF-A is rooted in a
design direction called L-finesse. The concept of L-finesse was used to shape
and detail the original LF-A, and it was used to reshape, redetail and
redefine this latest version. Lexus has further refined the styling of the new
LF-A to enhance its exotic nature with a greater use of curved surfaces and
interesting details.
The running gear of the LF-A is just as it was with the original, powered
by a high-revving 500-plus horsepower V10 engine. Its front mid-engine
placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators,
allows for excellent weight distribution. The horsepower, superior
aerodynamics, and revised styling makes a top speed of 200 mph not only
possible but probable.
An "F" logo, indicating the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F"
marque, is located on each front fender.
"The first LF-A was a pure concept, but one that we went so far as to
conduct engineering analysis on," said Payne. "This latest concept is much
closer to a vehicle that we would bring to market, and one in which we will be
gauging consumer interest."

Waterloo Businessman Elected to Head Provincial Association
Dave Willis, President of Ayr Coach Lines Ltd. Of Waterloo has been elected Chair of the Ontario Motor Coach Association (OMCA) for 2007 and took over duties January 1.
The OMCA is one of Canada’s largest and leading travel/tourism trade associations with 1027 corporate members from across Canada and the USA.
Dave was first elected to the OMCA Board in 1999 and has served as Secretary Treasurer and Vice Chair. He has also served on numerous OMCA committees.
He will preside over an industry that has seen many ups and downs over the last few years. Fluctuating and rising fuel prices, as well as the high insurance rates of 2004 has put pressure on company profits. Travel and tourism was greatly affected by 911 and then by SARS. But the industry is seeing a resurgence in tours and travel to the US because of the change in the value of the dollar. As well, commuter business to and from the GTA is growing and provides a great opportunity for coach companies.
Dave Willis is positive about the industry and looks forward to overseeing it as it meets the challenges of 2007. “Motor coach travel is the safest, environmentally friendly, cost efficient and the most flexible way to travel. With road congestion, concern for the environment, airport inconveniencies and pressure on the taxpayers, comfortable motor coach travel is bound to increase”, says Willis.
Ayr Coach Lines has been operated by the Willis Family for over 41 years, serving the Waterloo Region with various types of transportation. Just over a year ago Ayr Coach sold their school bus fleet so they could focus on the motor coach market expanding through-out South Western Ontario and into the State of New York. The Willis family’s vision has always been to provide “Quality Service” to their customers which has not only maintained their valued customers, but increased their client base. This is why Ayr Coach developed and values their slogan “Miles of Smiles”.

Toyota FT-HS concept debuts at the 2007 North American International Auto Show
DETROIT - The Toyota FT-HS hybrid sports concept will make its debut at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Pairing a potent hybrid powertrain with essential sports car fundamentals, the FT-HS concept was a joint undertaking of Calty, Toyota's North American-based, research and design center located in Newport Beach, Calif., and Toyota's California-based Advanced Product Strategy Group. The design team was assigned the task of creating a mid-priced sports car that integrates ecology and emotion in a concept that addresses the question "What is a suitable sports car for the 21st Century?"
"Drivers today are not satisfied with cars that are simply fast," said
Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. "In addition to driving
enjoyment, today's drivers are concerned about safety, ecology and social
responsibility."
The FT-HS incorporates hybrid capability while maintaining sports car
essentials, such as a sleek profile, lightweight aero-dynamic materials, and
an advanced high-output powertrain for revolutionary acceleration and optimal
performance. This 21st century sports car is fun-to-drive with eco-friendly
benefits such as ultra-low emissions and fuel efficiency. The FT-HS appeals to
an emerging buyer who grew up eco-conscious and perceives technology as a
necessity, not a luxury.
This two-plus-two concept is a front-engine, rear-drive sports car with a
projected zero-to-60 acceleration in the four-second range. A powerful V6,
3.5L-engine is coupled with a 21st century sports hybrid system with a target
power output of approximately 400-horsepower. At a mid-priced market position,
FT-HS would be a true "attainable exotic" with 21st Century performance.
FT-HS expresses the core values of a Toyota Brand design strategy that
combines two key elements: J-Factor and Vibrant Clarity. J-Factor refers to
the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural
sensibilities. Vibrant Clarity is the design language used to express the
J-factor much in the same way that L-Finesse is the language of the Lexus
Division. It is the combination of perfect imbalance, freeform geometrics and
integrated component architecture. The result of these three elements is
subtractive mass, a minimalist style that is not only lightweight, but also
looks lightweight.
The exterior design was led by Calty designer, Alex Shen. From a design
perspective, the theme of the FT-HS achieves sleek, taut surfaces in its
exterior features - especially in the doors and body style. The front and rear
have been sculpted to remove mass around key functional components. Freeform
geometrics define the integration of fluid surfaces contrasting hard-edge
"Aero-Corners" which promote smooth airflow and reduce turbulence.
The roof has a distinctive scooped-out section designed to reduce
aerodynamic drag and provide head room at the key areas. Made from carbon
fiber Kevlar, the roof retracts so that the roof panel and back window pivot
fluidly in a downward motion to stow in the rear seat space.
The vehicle's triangular profile has a floating "C" pillar, aero corners,
a full upper-body pan, and innovative open top. A hood features a scalloped
channel, exposing the hybrid engine. Integrated component architecture can be
seen in the aerospace-inspired lighting. The tail lamp unit spans the entire
rear, and has an integrated retractable spoiler. Light-emitting diode (LED)
clusters are located in the headlamps and the wing for energy-efficiency and
decreased heat loss. Other exterior features include a speed-activated wing
that elevates at high speed for additional stability and traction. The rear
showcases a carbon fiber lower diffuser with integrated wide exhaust and
carbon fiber wheels.
The driver-oriented interior was created by Calty designer, William
Chergosky and exudes sleekness, technology, and performance. The lean skeletal
look is achieved with exposed cross-car architecture and high-tech materials
such as carbon fiber, and titanium. FT-HS' interior features create a
dedicated driver's cockpit which include subtractive mass expressions such as
cross-car instrument panel structure and delta wing driver pod. The delta-wing
driver's pod integrates many useful functions into a lightweight structural
unit. All of the important functions and details are presented almost
exclusively to the driver. For example, touch-trace sensors which surround the
driver and act as tactile guides for finger controls when traveling at high
speeds.
By eliminating the "B" pillar and creating a suspended "C" pillar, the
minimalist style works in conjunction with subtractive mass. An integrated
instrument panel surrounds the driver, creating an enclosed pod effect.
Armrests flow seamlessly into the door and surrounding interior.
Seating is optimized for a lightweight appearance and function: the
seating accommodates four and then coverts to a two-seater when the roof
retracts. The passenger-seat area is open with a simple exposed airbag on the
cross-car beam.
A telescoping hub-less steering wheel incorporates semi-automatic paddle
shifters and allows the meter to be shifted forward in order to shorten the
driver's focus-time between the road and meter, and ultimately enhance driver
focus.
"FT-HS redefines the sports car experience not only with styling but also
in function and performance," said Wearing. "The FT-HS is Toyota's answer to
the question 'What is a suitable sports car for the 21st Century?'"
