National tourism indicators - Fourth quarter and annual 2005
Tourism spending advanced 1.0% in the fourth quarter of 2005, as both domestic and international travellers increased their spending in Canada. After three consecutive quarterly declines, international visitor spending increased 0.9% in the fourth quarter, matching the increase in the number of international visitors. The year 2005 was another good one for tourism in Canada. Overall spending advanced 3.8% following a 5.1% gain in 2004. In contrast to the fourth quarter results, domestic tourists were the sole reason for the increase for the year as international visitors decreased their spending by 1.3%.

The average weekly earnings of payroll employees rose by $6.86 (+0.9%) from December to January to $744.11 (seasonally adjusted). Industries showing the strongest increases include forestry, logging and support (+3.6%), management of companies and enterprises (+2.1%), and arts, entertainment and recreation (+2.0%).

Ontario's housing market shows signs of slowing down, says RBC Economics
TORONTO - Ontario's housing market is showing signs of a controlled cooling down, according to the latest Housing Affordability Index issued March 29, by RBC Economics. "Affordability deteriorated across every major housing class in the fourth quarter," said Derek Holt, assistant chief economist, RBC. "Slower household income growth, higher mortgage rates on the heels of higher bond yields, and a jump in utility costs are the drivers behind the decline. While condos continue to remain the cheapest option for Ontario homeowners, they also experienced the sharpest erosion to affordability compared to the other house classes."

Waldo County town votes to ban GMOs
MONTVILLE, Maine - Residents have voted to include a ban of genetically engineered seeds in the town's land use ordinances. Released from Statscan March 27, 2006 - Retail sales strengthened in 2004, as consumers took advantage of easier credit, growing employment and rising personal disposable income to fix up their homes and buy some new furniture. Store retailers reported operating revenues of $370.7 billion, a 4.2% increase from 2003. This was a faster pace than the gain of 3.5% in 2003. Retailers were buffeted during 2003 by events such as the SARS outbreak and the power blackout in Ontario.

Farm Product Price Index - January 2006
Prices farmers received for their commodities fell 4.5% in January 2006 from the same month a year earlier as prices for both crops and livestock dropped. Overall, producers received prices for crops that were 4.8% below levels in January 2005, continuing the downward trend in year-over-year price changes since the summer of 2003, according to the Farm Product Price Index (FPPI). Farmers received lower prices for all crops except potatoes and vegetables.

Released from Statscan March 27, 2006 - Non-store retailers posted a modest increase in revenues in 2004, but their actual share of the Canadian retailing market fell slightly. These retailers provided $11.8 billion in goods and services, a 1.2% increase over 2003. Even so, this format has made only modest inroads into the Canadian retailing market, accounting for a mere 3.1% share in 2004 down from 3.3% in 2003.
