Consumer Price Index - February 2006

Consumers paid less for gasoline at the pump in February, which pushed the 12-month change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) back down to 2.2% from 2.8% the month before. February's slowdown in the All-items index was due mainly to a 6.8% decline in the price of gasoline between January and February. Excluding energy, the All-items index rose 1.6% between February 2005 and February 2006, the same increase as in the previous month.

The unpredictable state of manufacturing - Monthly Survey of Manufacturing - January 2006

Manufacturing shipments continued on an erratic course in January as the ever-volatile motor vehicles and parts industries pulled down total shipments, despite strength in several resource-based industries. Shipments declined 0.7% to $51.8 billion in January, following a 1.8% advance in December. A substantial drop in motor vehicles and parts manufacturing largely contributed to January's weakness. Excluding the motor vehicles and parts industries, shipments actually edged up by 0.3%.

Transcontinental increases revenues by 6% in first quarter and maintains annual earnings-per-share objective - Announcement of a 18% dividend increase

MONTREAL - For the fiscal quarter ended January 31, 2006, Transcontinental's revenues reached $547.4 million, up 6% over $515.3 million in the first quarter of 2005. The increase stems mainly from the acquisition of U.S.-based direct marketer JDM in February, 2005, as well as from organic revenue growth of 2%, but was mitigated by the negative impact of the Canadian dollar's appreciation and competitive market conditions in commercial printing.

Ontario's economic growth modest, says RBC forecast

TORONTO, March 16 - As manufacturers continue to face challenges through 2006, Ontario's economic outlook remains relatively healthy, according to a new provincial forecast released today by RBC Financial Group. "Even with about one-fifth of Ontario's economic activity driven by manufacturing, we still anticipate the province to achieve growth of 3.2 per cent growth in 2006 and 2.8 per cent in 2007," said Craig Wright, vice- president and chief economist, RBC. "By controlling the pace of program spending - particularly on health care - the government's goal of achieving 'balanced within the mandate' lies within reach."

Study: Canadian exporters and a booming China - 1998 to 2004

Canadian exporters in niche resource industries are fuelling, at least in part, the economic engine that has transformed the People's Republic of China into the world's sixth largest economy, according to a new study. The report says most Canadian firms do not specialize in manufacturing machinery or the kinds of components that Chinese factories assemble into finished products, they have not been significant sources of Chinese imports from Canada.

CFOs project slight hiring increase in second quarter

TORONTO - Hiring activity in accounting and finance is expected to pick up slightly in the second quarter, according to the most recent Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index. Five per cent of chief financial officers (CFOs) surveyed plan to add staff and 2 per cent anticipate personnel reductions. Ninety-one per cent of respondents project no change in employment levels.

Labour Force Survey - February 2006

Employment increased by an estimated 25,000 in February as a large gain in part time more than offset losses in full time. At the same time, the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 6.4%, matching the 30-year low set in November 2005.

Progress in Statistics", published in January 2006, concludes that there has been limited progress in the last thirty years both in the number of countries reporting national statistics as well as in the degree to which national statistics capture gender-related issues. With over forty percent of Africa’s population not covered by census, it is clear that today’s statistical reporting simply excludes many of the world’s poorest people.

SUDBURY - The United Steelworkers has restated its opposition to Xstrata PLC trying to swallow Falconbridge Ltd. Merrill Lynch & Co. analysts based in London said this week that they believe Xstrata will bid for full control of Falconbridge after May 14. "A merger with Inco is better than getting taken over by Xstrata, or indeed by any other company," said Myles Sullivan, President of Steelworkers' Local 2020 at Falconbridge, representing 220 office, clerical and technical employees.
