Improved economic expectations and investment climate return consumer confidence to upward trend, according to RBC CASH Index

NEW YORK, Feb. 10 - After beginning 2006 on a down note, consumer confidence rebounded in February, resuming the positive trend that began in October of 2005, according to the most recent results of the RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index, which measured the attitudes of 1,000 Americans this week. Issued today by RBC Financial Group, the RBC CASH Index for February stands at 96.1, a considerable increase from 78.2 in January - and also significantly above the February 2005 level of 79.1.

OTTAWA, Feb. 10 - Canada's wind energy industry installed 239 MW of new wind energy capacity in 2005, shattering the previous annual installation record of 122 MW established in 2004. As a result, Canada's total installed wind energy capacity grew by 54% in 2005 and now stands at 683 MW.

The New Housing Price Index rose 0.6% in December, up slightly from November's increase of 0.5%. On a 12-month basis prices were up 5.9% compared to 5.5% the previous month. The New Housing Price Index (1997=100) rose to 133.2 in December.

CAMBRIDGE, ON, Feb. 9 - ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. today reported its financial results for the three months ended December 31, 2005. Solar Group operating earnings, excluding Spheral Solar Power ("SSP"), were $5.1 million, a $1.7 million or 50% increase from the third quarter a year ago.

Biggest Reason For Disengaged Employees: Failure To Explain Why They’re There

Toronto February 8, 2006 — About two-thirds of employees do not know or understand their employer’s business strategy and are not engaged in their jobs, according to a survey by Right Management Consultants. Only about one-third of employees at a typical company are fully engaged and daily “walk the talk” in their jobs, according a North American Right survey of 336 organizations. The remainder of employees are unsure of or disengaged from their employers’ missions and business strategies – leading to negative consequences such as lower productivity and product quality, more customer complaints, and higher turnover.

The past 30 years have seen tremendous growth in the United States in productivity and wealth, and yet we don’t seem very appreciative for what we have. In fact, Americans’ assessment of their level of happiness is declining significantly, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. In 1957, 53 percent of Americans considered themselves “very happy.” By the early 1970s, only 34 percent expressed such satisfaction. Late in the 1990s, the number had dropped all the way down to 30 percent.

Afghan police shot dead four people protesting yesterday against cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that have unleashed waves of rage across the Muslim world. Tens of thousands of Muslims also demonstrated in the Middle East, Asia and Africa over the drawings, first published in Denmark, then Norway and then several other European countries. The 12 cartoonists whose work touched off the violence were yesterday reported to be in hiding, frightened, and under police guard.

Toyota to expand Woodstock, Ontario plant
