CALGARY, The Alberta Grain and Oilseeds Producers Advocacy Trust released a report from University of Calgary economist Dr. Christopher Bruce of Economica. In the report Dr. Bruce concludes that grain and oilseeds producers will, on average, lose between $54 and $77 per acre in 2006.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will provide service on its business enquiries telephone lines on two Saturdays,February 18 and February 25, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (local time). This extended service will assist employers who need help preparing T4 slips for employees. Wholesale trade December 2005
A rebound in the automotive sector and continued growth in the building materials sector boosted wholesale sales in December. Wholesale sales rose 0.4% in December to $40.4 billion, after declining 0.3% in November. Most of the overall increase posted in December was attributable to two sectors: automotive products and building materials. Excluding the automotive products sector, wholesale sales declined 0.5% in December, after rising 1.0% the previous month.

Monthly Survey of Large Retailers - December and annual 2005
Large retailers continued to ring up sales in 2005, gaining 5.9% compared to 2004. The increase was slightly off the 6.4% gain in 2004, but fairly close to the average growth rate over the last five years. The group of large retailers saw sales rise in all major commodity groups for 2005, with increases ranging from 2.7% to 8.5%.

Study: Emerging patterns in the labour market: A reversal from the 1990s
Many labour market trends established in the 1990s have been reversed since 2000. Most of these recent trends intensified in the past year, according to a report released today in the Canadian Economic Observer. In particular, it was another banner year for the resource sector. These gains were reflected in stronger employment growth in rural areas and in large firms. In terms of supply, older workers continued to fill the bulk of new jobs. A new trend was full-time positions, which accounted for most job growth.

Non-residential Building Construction Price Index - Fourth quarter 2005
The composite price index (1997=100) for non-residential building construction reached 136.7 in the fourth quarter, up 1.3% from previous quarter and 5.1% higher compared with the fourth quarter of 2004. The quarterly increase is mostly the result of material and labour cost increases and a strong market for non-residential building construction.

Online job ads rebounded sharply in January to 2,162,000 new unduplicated online job ads posted for the calendar month, according to The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series. The January total was up 529,000, an increase of one-third from the December low. January’s total was slightly higher than the August 2005 monthly peak of 2,131,000. April 2005 is the earliest monthly data available in this data series.

Labour Force Survey - January 2006
Employment increased by 26,000 in January following a pause the month before. Although employment increased, the unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 6.6% as more people entered the labour force in search of work.
Compared to 12 months ago, employment is up 1.7% (+269,000), slightly less than the rate of employment growth in the United States over the same period (+2.0%).

Canadian international merchandise trade - December 2005
Canada's exports surged to a new monthly peak in December, as well as to a new annual record for 2005, despite a Canadian dollar that hit its highest level since the early 1990s.
Canadian companies exported merchandise worth $41.3 billion in December, up 3.9% from November. With foreign goods cheaper to purchase because of the rising loonie, imports rose 2.3% to $33.6 billion.

Promised Support for Quality Improvement Confirmed
The provincial government confirmed that the University of Guelph will receive $5 million in “quality improvement” funding promised the 2005 Ontario budget. “Quality of education is important, so we took a leap of faith last year, hiring faculty and staff on the basis that support would be forthcoming,” said president Alastair Summerlee. “With greatest respect, we are very pleased with the new funding, but had we not received it, we would have been looking at reductions in faculty and further reductions in staff.”

| China Predicts End Of Poverty By 2050
A blueprint for China's future Thursday predicted that the world's most populous country will have eradicated poverty by 2050, reports The Guardian (UK). The China Modernization Report, drawn up by the country's leading research institute, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, predicted that the more than 80 million Chinese living below the government's poverty line of less than 668 yuan ($81) a year will be lifted out of poverty and that half the projected population of 1.5 billion will own a car and be able to afford overseas travel.
