KPMG Corporate Tax Rate Survey for 2006 - Downward Trend Continues
TORONTO - KPMG has released its thirteenth annual survey of corporate tax rates around the world. The survey shows that Canada's rate of 36.1% is higher than the EU average of 25.04% and the OECD average of 28.31%, but still below the U.S. rate of 40%. Despite a general global trend toward falling tax rates, Canada's rate is unchanged from 2005.

Diesel fuel oil sales rose 8 800 cubic metres or 0.4%.

A recent survey, conducted by the Teaching Learning Technology (TLT) Steering Committee, found that Laurier faculty are generally happy with the classroom technology offered at Laurier. DaimlerChrysler Canada Reports March and First Quarter Sales Results
WINDSOR - DaimlerChrysler Canada today reported a total of 19,330 units sold in March, including 5,169 cars and 14,161 trucks. Compared to sales of 17,761 units in March, 2005, sales for the month are up 8.8 per cent. Car sales for the month increased 13.3 per cent and truck sales increased 7.3 per cent. Compared to first quarter 2005, total sales for the same period in 2006 are up 5.9 per cent, with increases of 20 per cent in car sales and 1.5 per cent in truck sales.

The Canadian economy edged up 0.2% in January, a pace slightly slower than that of the previous three months. Strength in service industries more than offset a decrease in the production of goods. Growth was concentrated in wholesale and retail trade, notably from vigorous sales of motor vehicles, as well as in construction activities, and in finance and real estate.

Canadian-built cameras help NASA's ultraviolet satellite return to operations
LONGUEUIL, Qc, - Launched in June 1999 and originally designed for a three-year mission, NASA's Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer astronomy satellite is back in full operation. The FUSE satellite is working again thanks to a team of scientists and engineers at the operations centre in Johns Hopkins University who reprogrammed its onboard software control system during 2005 to continue the mission. FUSE had a near-death experience in December 2004 when the third of four onboard reaction wheels stopped spinning, depriving the satellite of stability and fine-pointing capacity.
