Canada's New Government Tables Proposed First-of-its-Kind Policy Direction on Telecommunications to CRTC Calling for Greater Reliance on Market Forces

OTTAWA - The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry, on June 13, tabled in Parliament a proposed policy direction to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). It is the first time since the adoption of the Telecommunications Act that such a policy direction has been issued to the CRTC. This is the first step in the government's plan to issue a formal policy direction to the CRTC.

Monthly Survey of Manufacturing April 2006

Despite a boost from price increases for petroleum products and primary metals, shipments declined in April, losing most of March's gains. A substantial drop in the production of aerospace products and parts was largely behind April's 1.5% decrease in shipments which stood at $50.4 billion. This was the third decline so far in 2006, and followed March's 1.6% advance in shipments. Excluding the aerospace industry, shipments were down a more modest 0.4%.

Chinese scientists develop salt tolerant grass

New motor vehicle sales decreased 0.7% in April, erasing the gain of 0.6% in March. Consumers drove 136,724 new vehicles off dealer lots in April, a decrease of about 1,000 vehicles from the previous month.

McGuinty breaks coal phase-out promise

On June 13, 2006 the Clean Air Alliance said that Dalton McGuinty broke his promise to phase-out Ontario's four remaining dirty coal-fired power plants by 2009. This is a huge betrayal of the people of Ontario and a huge step backwards for public health -- our coal plants kill 668 people per year in this province and cost us billions in health costs. Moreover, McGuinty's broken promise will prevent Ontario from meeting its Kyoto Protocol greenhouse gas emission reduction target in 2010.

Disability of Terminated Employees Risky for Employer

A recent court case has caught the attention of the media and many employers. The case is Egan v. Alcatel Canada Inc., [2006] O.J. No. 34, a decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal. The Egan case deals with the issue of an employer’s liability for disability coverage when a terminated employee becomes disabled within the reasonable notice period. Alcatel was held liable for the full 12 months of Egan’s disability, even though a court awarded only nine months’ reasonable notice, because Alcatel did not continue Egan’s disability insurance during the reasonable notice period.

ATS announces sale of Berlin coil winding business

CAMBRIDGE - ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. today announced it has sold the assets of its Berlin, Germany coil winding subsidiary to a private, German-based company. This automation systems business, which occupies a 23,000 sq. ft. leased facility, had revenues of $8.9 million and an operating loss of approximately $0.6 million in fiscal 2006.
