Lack of Transparency, Accountability at Labour Relations Board Creates "Crisis in Confidence"

EDMONTON - The AFL released a study on June 22, conducted by Dr. Lorne Sossin, Associate Dean of Law at the University of Toronto, examining the conduct of the Alberta Labour Relations Board in the wake of the Bill 27 controversy. Consumers less optimistic in May

OTTAWA - Consumer optimism eased in May, especially in Central Canada, according to the Conference Board's monthly Index of Consumer Confidence. With consumers expressing less optimism about their future financial and job prospects in May, the Index fell nearly four points to 120.5, its biggest monthly decline since the start of the year. Despite the setback, the Index still remained roughly equal to the monthly average over the past two years.

Santa Cruz county bans biotech crops

As expected, county supervisors Tuesday approved a moratorium on growing genetically engineered crops within county lines.The approval puts Santa Cruz County among the ranks of Trinity, Marin and Mendocino counties, which have prohibited the planting and production of such crops.

Business slipped for Canada's railways in April as slightly less freight was loaded than in March. Overall, railways in Canada loaded 24.2 million tonnes of goods, 3.6% less than the month before.

Current economic conditions

Commodity prices dipped in May. Oil retreated from its record high of US $75 a barrel and natural gas prices were only about half of last year's peak. The exceptionally warm winter in the United States put an end to the three-year-long surge in energy prices. This sharply curtailed Canada's export earnings, lowering both the trade surplus and corporate profits.

U of G Prof Creating Superior Filters to Stop Disease

A University of Guelph professor is developing new filters that, instead of simply relying on small pores to block contaminants, actively remove unwanted components. Chris Hall of the Department of Environmental Biology is making filters from protein-enhanced paper to detect and capture harmful particles. “These filters will have a strong potential to improve Canadians’ health and safety,” he said.

Leading indicators May 2006

The composite index grew 0.3% in May after increasing 0.4% in April. The rises in the index have ranged from 0.3% to 0.5% over most of the last two years. The sources of growth narrowed significantly, as only 6 of the 10 components expanded, the fewest since March 2005. Consumer and business spending lifted the overall index.

Dupont, BP join to produce biofuels

DOVER - Chemical maker DuPont said Tuesday it will begin marketing biofuels for the transportation sector next year through a partnership with oil company BP PLC. Employer pension plans (trusteed pension funds) Fourth quarter 2005

The value of retirement savings held in trusteed pension funds approached $800 billion in the final months of 2005. Funds have increased in value for six straight quarters since the low of $652.2 billion observed in the second quarter of 2004. They accumulated $799.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2005, a 2.9% rise over the previous three months. Since 1995, fund assets have more than doubled in value, while in the last five years, they have grown more than 30%.

Consumer Price Index May 2006

Consumer prices advanced 2.8% on average between May 2005 and May 2006, a substantial gain from the 2.4% change of April. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), excluding the eight volatile components identified by the Bank of Canada for monetary policy, recorded its strongest 12-month increase since December 2003, jumping from 1.6% in April to 2.0% in May this year.

Retail trade April 2006

Retail sales surged to a record high for the second straight month in April, in part due to a near-record price hike for gasoline. Retailers sold $32.8 billion worth of goods and services, up 1.7% from March, identical to the increase the month before. These back-to-back gains were the strongest monthly advances since a 1.8% increase recorded in March 2004.

The value of agricultural production rose only slightly in 2005 as a strong decline in the value of inventory change offset rising sales of agricultural products and higher program payments. Sales of agricultural products edged up 3.1% to $38.5 billion. This level was slightly below the previous five-year average for the period between 2000 and 2004.

Cash income for Canadian farm businesses held relatively steady in 2005 in the wake of higher revenues from cattle and calves accompanied by declining receipts from crops and hogs. DALSA Semiconductor Delivers World’s First 100+ Million Pixel CCD Image Sensor Chip to Semiconductor Technologies Associates (STA)

DALSA Semiconductor, a division of DALSA Corporation, an international high performance semiconductor and electronics company, announced today that it has successfully fabricated and delivered the world’s highest resolution image sensor chip to its customer, Semiconductor Technology Associates ('STA') of San Juan Capistrano, California. The CCD device, which measures approximately four inches by four inches, has a total resolution of over 111 million pixels (10,560 pixels x 10,560 pixels at 9µm). It is the world’s first imager to break the 100 million pixel barrier.

Canadian residents continued to travel abroad in April as they set a third consecutive monthly record for trips to overseas countries. Although overall travel to Canada increased, the number of trips from overseas countries fell for the third time this year.

Wholesale trade April 2006

Wholesale sales remained essentially unchanged in April (+0.1%) after posting strong growth in March (+1.2%). Wholesalers sold $41.6 billion worth of goods and services in April. Increased sales of consumer goods were offset by decreased capital spending. Total wholesale sales have generally been rising since April 2003.
