National tourism indicators - First quarter 2006

Electronics Energize Auto Parts Imports from Low-Wage Countries, says Scotiabank Economist
TORONTO - Automotive electronics are the fastest-growing segment of the auto parts industry, but most of the growth is being captured by low-wage countries, according to the latest Canadian Auto Report released today by Scotia Economics. North American built passenger vehicles now contain nearly US$2,000 of electronic equipment, up from US$1,300 five years ago. The total distance driven by vehicles registered in Canada fell 18% in the last quarter of 2005 compared to the previous quarter. Light vehicles (those weighing less than 4.5 tonnes) were driven an average of 3,650 kilometres during the period October 1 to December 31, 2005, down 18% from 4,460 kilometres in the previous three-month period.

TORONTO - While considerable gains have been made, government organizations nonetheless continue to use the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act as a shield to block the release of consultants' contracts and the financial arrangements made with suppliers of goods and services, said Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian. Since early 2005, the IPC has overturned 11 decisions made by provincial or municipal organizations that refused to disclose this type of information.

Harvest of ethanol may supply new fuel crop

Poplar trees and switch grass are on track to become important weapons in national security defense, and a Walnut Creek lab is speeding them on their way. The Joint Genome Institute, best known for the Human Genome Project, is betting genetic research can make those plants ideal for producing ethanol, grain alcohol that can be used as vehicle fuel. Today, most ethanol is fermented from corn, but scientists say switching to the other plants could give it the boost it needs to significantly reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil.

Farm Product Price Index April 2006
Prices farmers received overall for their commodities fell 0.9% in April 2006 compared with the same month a year earlier as livestock prices dipped, while crop prices edged up. Prices for livestock and animal products were 1.0% lower in April than they were a year earlier. This was the third consecutive month of year-over-year decreases, driven mainly by lower hog prices.

Laurier OneCard takes top prize in national competition
Wilfrid Laurier University has taken first place in the 2006 Quality and Productivity Awards through The Canadian Association of University Business Officers. The award recognizes how Laurier has taken the OneCard system and expanded its use far beyond its original use as a meal plan card. The OneCard is now used as an identification card, library card, access card, a credit card (for faculty and staff), and can be used to purchase food at 15 campus locations and seven off-campus locations, for photocopies, book purchases at the university bookstore, and even to pay for taxis and purchases at a local pharmacy. It is also used as a bus pass.

Government Review of Phelps Dodge Takeover of INCO Needed, CAW says
TORONTO - The takeover bid for INCO by American copper giant Phelps Dodge Corp. must be subject to a review by the federal and provincial governments, the CAW says. "The Canadian and Ontario governments must take an active role in reviewing this takeover bid to ensure there is not a negative economic or social impact on thousands of workers, their families and northern Ontario communities," said CAW president Buzz Hargrove.

Warmer weather conditions throughout most regions of Canada resulted in reduced sales to the residential (-1.3%) and the commercial sector (-2.1%).
