Survey: Canadian Small Business Owners Concerned About Changes to the Bank Act 76% Say Keep Protections in Place

TORONTO - According to a POLLARA Inc. survey released by Advocis, three-quarters (76 per cent) of small business owners say that existing measures to protect consumers should be kept in place due to privacy of their personal information and sales pressure concerns. This finding suggests that small business owners believe that the privacy of their health and medical history is more important than having greater access to information about life and health insurance services provided by banks.

Sun Life Financial reports record operating EPS of $0.85, up 10% over Q1 2005

TORONTO - Sun Life Financial Inc. announced April 27 record operating earnings of $493 million or $0.85 per share for the quarter ended March 31, 2006. Operating earnings per share (EPS) were up 10% (14% in constant currency) over the first quarter of 2005. Operating return on equity (ROE) grew to 13.2% for the quarter, up from 12.6% in the first quarter of 2005.

Strong New Leader Would Bring Greater Accountability

The Ontario government is continuing the renewal of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) by nominating a new Chair. On April 27 the Government of Ontario has nominated former MPP and federal Cabinet Minister Steve Mahoney as Chair of the Board of Directors, subject to review by the Standing Committee on Government Agencies. If confirmed by the standing committee and appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, Mahoney would take over from current acting Chair Jill Hutcheon, who will remain as President.

Farm Product Price Index February 2006

Prices farmers received for their commodities in February 2006 fell 7.0% from the same month a year earlier in the wake of lower livestock and grain prices. Prices for livestock and animal products were 7.7% lower in February 2006 than they were a year earlier. This was the third consecutive month of year-over-year decreases, following a year and a half of almost continuous increases.

Rules and regulations are making Canada less competitive

OTTAWA - Non-tariff trade barriers, both interprovincial and international, are making Canada less competitive, according to a Conference Board report released April 25. "Canada would benefit from a fresh dose of competition," said Paul Darby, Deputy Chief Economist. "Although tariffs on goods are declining, the list of non-tariff barriers is daunting. The primary impact of these barriers is to raise costs, which reduces the competitiveness of Canadian firms. This is not a federal versus provincial issue- all governments are responsible for maintaining barriers."

Canada -The consolidated net financial debt of the federal, provincial, territorial, and local governments, defined as the excess of liabilities over financial assets, increased to $798.4 billion as of March 31, 2004, up $3.9 billion or 0.5% from March 31, 2003. An increase of $17.2 billion in financial assets and $21.1 billion in liabilities accounted for the rise.

TORONTO – Laid-off employees who started their own businesses or consulting practices last year took less time to get them off the ground than in 2004, according to Right Management release on April 25.
More than half (53%) of laid-off employees who bought or started businesses last year did so within 3 months, and 80% got them up and running within 6 months. That compares to 34% who launched or acquired businesses within 3 months, and 66% within 6 months, in 2004.

Wholesale trade for February 2006

Wholesale sales declined in February after advancing strongly in the previous two months. The broad-based declines caused total sales to fall 1.1% to $41.0 billion. Sales fell in five of the seven sectors, with the largest declines in personal and household goods (-3.7%) and automotive products (-1.1%). The farm products sector posted a 4.5% increase in sales after three months of steep declines.

The economy loses the services of roughly 1 out of every 20 employees, for an average of 11 weeks, to a long-term sickness absence, according to a new study published today in Perspectives on Labour and Income. The study, based on the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, focused on employees who took a long-term absence in 2002. It examines factors preceding the absence in 2001 and consequences of the absence in 2003.

Commentary: We Must Take Tough Action Against Corruption

Hilary Benn, the UK Secretary of State for International Development, argues in The Financial Times that "corruption, like temptation, exists everywhere, but in poor countries it can kill. Money meant for drugs for a sick child, or to build a hospital, can be siphoned off into private bank accounts or to build a luxury house." At the World Bank Spring Meeting on Sunday, Benn writes, "I will be calling for a new international framework for tough, effective and consistent action to tackle this corruption, not least because as development and finance ministers we have a shared responsibility to ensure that the extra resources from debt cancellation and from increased aid, genuinely go to help the poor. If all poor people lived in well-governed countries this would be much easier.
