Real Estate in Toronto - June keeps pace
TORONTO - The Toronto Area real estate market began the summer season with a strong showing in June, Toronto Real Estate Board President Dorothy Mason announced July 6. "The year continues to be very active," Mrs. Mason said. "June's 8,730 sales are within five per cent of last June's total of 9,153, which was part of a record year."

Building permits May 2006
The value of building permits surpassed the $5-billion mark for a sixth straight month in May. Municipalities issued $5.4 billion in permits, up 6.9% from April and fuelled mainly by intentions in the non-residential sector.

WINNIPEG - CanWest Global Communications Corp. today reported its financial results for the third quarter and nine months ended May 31, 2006. DaimlerChrysler Canada Reports June Sales Results
WINDSOR - DaimlerChrysler Canada today reported a total of 17,755 units sold in June, including 3,638 cars and 14,117 trucks. Compared to the all-time record June sales of 27,170 units in June 2005, sales for the month are down 34.7 per cent. Car sales for June 2006 decreased 54.4 per cent and truck sales decreased 26.4 per cent. Both comparisons are impacted by the unusually high June 2005 sales, which included an increase of 28 per cent in car sales and a 40 per cent increase in Jeep(R) brand sales.

Toyota Canada: Record first half for 2006
TORONTO - Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) announced the company enjoyed its sixth consecutive record sales in June, in both the Toyota and Lexus divisions, for a record first half for 2006. Total sales of 18,522 Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks easily outpaced the company's previous June record of 16,774 vehicles, set in 2005. Gross domestic product by industry April 2006
The Canadian economy advanced by 0.1% in April, matching the pace of the previous month. Overall, services output rose by 0.3% in April, sustained mainly by growth in retail and wholesale trade, the financial sector, and in transportation and warehousing. In contrast, declines in utilities, construction, manufacturing, as well as in mining, oil and gas exploration resulted in a 0.3% drop in the goods-producing industries.

Industrial product and raw materials price indexes May 2006
Raw materials prices rose sharply for the second consecutive month due to higher prices for crude oil and non-ferrous metals. Prices for manufactured goods at the factory gate edged up in May. Prices charged by manufacturers, as measured by the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI), were up 0.3% from April to May. Higher prices for primary metal products and petroleum products were the major contributors to this monthly increase.

The average weekly earnings of payroll employees increased $1.58 (+0.2%) from March to April to $747.80 (seasonally adjusted). This brings the year-to-date growth in earnings to 4.2%. Canada's population First quarter 2006
Canada's population increased at its fastest first quarter rate in four years from January to March, surpassing the 32.5-million mark. Net international migration continued to be the main engine of growth. Population exchanges between Canada and the rest of the world accounted for nearly three-quarters of the estimated growth of 78,200 during the first three months of the year. It was the biggest first quarter increase since 2002, when the nation gained 83,400 people.

$37 Billion Debt Cut For Poor Nations
"The World Bank is preparing to cancel billions of dollars of debt owed to it by many of the world's poorest nations," reports The BBC (UK).
"Some $37 billion in debt relief will be provided to 19 countries on July 1, following agreements reached at last year's historic G8 summit in Scotland. Leaders at the gathering in Gleneagles pledged to cancel the debts of many of world's poorest countries, most of which are in Africa. The move will provide debt relief to the countries over the next 40 years.

Port of Vancouver Ahead of Schedule on Extended Gates Program
Off-dock facilities join container terminals to extend hours of operation
VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) and terminal operators are extending hours of operations at container terminals and off-dock facilities in the Port of Vancouver by an additional 20 per cent. The port's three container terminals and five key independent off-dock facilities will add a Tuesday evening gate in a pilot program beginning July 4, 2006.
