TORONTO - The generation known for its "me first" mentality is juggling the needs of their parents and children with their own future retirement needs, according to the "State of the Baby Boomer" study released today by BMO Financial Group. The study, conducted by The Strategic Counsel, reveals that three in five Canadian boomers with children aged 18 and over are providing some kind of financial support to their kids. Adding to the pressure, one-quarter of those boomers whose parents are still alive have one or more elderly parents that need their assistance on a regular basis.

Exporter confidence falls again; preparing for tougher times
OTTAWA - Confidence levels among Canadian exporters continue to decline amid growing evidence of a global economic moderation, a marked retreat from the boom years between 2002 and 2004 according to the semi-annual Trade Confidence Index (TCI) survey from Export Development Canada (EDC). "As the economy decelerates from the best global conditions in 10 years, Canadian exporters are very clearly anticipating a much tougher time over the next 6 months," said Peter Hall, Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist. "Exporters usually thrive when global economic performance is this solid, but Canada's strong dollar has created a significant challenge for exporters. Unlike previous episodes of dollar strength, exporters are standing up to the storm with aggressive counter-measures."

Executives Cite July and August as Best Time for Staff Vacations
TORONTO - Summer vacations aren't just for students. A new survey shows employers also prefer their teams to take scheduled time off during the summer months. Half of executives surveyed (50 per cent) said July is the best month for employees to take vacations; 21 per cent named August as the most favourable time for staff breaks.

Stop the CHUM deal and the layoffs says CEP
OTTAWA - Canada's largest media union is calling on the Canadian Radio, Television and Telecommunications Commission to immediately intervene in the proposed sale of CHUM Ltd to Bell Globemedia. New house prices continued to rise rapidly in May, with the strongest increases in Alberta. The New Housing Price Index rose by 1.3% over the previous month to 140.0 (1997=100). Compared to one year ago, contractors' selling prices have increased 9.1%.

Investment in non-residential building construction hit a record high for the 13th consecutive quarter between April and June, thanks largely to huge gains in British Columbia and Alberta. OTTAWA - Canada's largest high-tech business alliance will release a blueprint for national growth later this summer that is in "stark contrast" with the narrow policy approaches to the use of Public Sector procurement by the federal department of Public Works, according to industry spokespeople. Senior widows saw their median family adjusted income decline continuously in the five years following the loss of their husband. On the other hand, widowers' median adjusted income was higher five years after the wife's death when compared to the year before that event.

Sales of refined petroleum products totalled 8 217 100 cubic metres in May, down 3.9% from May 2005. Sales decreased in five of the seven major product groups, with heavy fuel oil down 205 600 cubic metres or 31.9%. Motor gasoline sales increased by 38 900 cubic metres or by 1.1%.

There were 44,400 firms active in the truck transportation industry in 2003. Overall, 35,000 firms identified themselves as owner operators, followed by 5,900 small for-hire carriers, or those with less than $1 million in revenue, and 3,500 for-hire carriers above that threshold.

China plans to become a major world power in agricultural science and technology by 2020, the country's Minister of Agriculture Du Qinglin said here Thursday.
