Ethanol shifts crop acres to corn, away from soybeans, in U.S. Corn Belt states
Demand for ethanol, a fuel made from corn, can turn Midwestern states back into the Corn Belt, said a University of Missouri (MU) agricultural economist. "Ethanol has major implications for corn acreage," said Pat Westhoff, with the MU Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI).

Radio listening Fall 2005
The lockout ordered by CBC management last August cost Canada's public broadcaster a large share of its listening audience, according to data from an annual survey covering more than 90,000 radio listeners.
The lockout, which ran from August 15 to October 11, coincided with the survey in which listeners filled in a log-type questionnaire over an eight-week period from September 5 to October 30. Listeners were split into groups, each of which filled in their log for a week.

Consumer Price Index June 2006
Canadians paid 2.5% more for the goods and services in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket in June 2006 than they did a year earlier. This was slower than the 12-month change of 2.8% in May.

Current economic conditions - First Quarter 2006

Wholesale trade May 2006
Wholesale sales rebounded 0.9% in May to $41.8 billion, after declining 0.3% in April. While most of the seven wholesale trade sectors registered gains, more than half of the increase was attributable to higher sales in the automotive sector. Excluding the automotive sector, sales rose 0.5%. Since September 2003, total wholesale sales have generally been rising.

Canada's Film, video and audio-visual production good in 2004
The financial picture for the nation's 688 film, video and audio-visual producers improved in 2004 despite a substantial decline in production revenues. Total revenues for the industry amounted to $2.9 billion, a 10.9% increase from 2001. The gain was largely due to growth in non-production activities such as broadcasting and film distribution. Expenses did not rise as quickly as revenues due to falling interest charges, and stable levels of depreciation and other expenses. As a result, the profit margin for the industry was 4.6% in 2004, well above the margin of 1.2% three years earlier.

Electricity To Power Ontario's Economy: BMO Provincial Outlook Report
TORONTO - Ontario is struggling with the adjustment to the strong Canadian dollar, but growth will get a boost from the start-up of major electricity projects, according to the Provincial Outlook report issued today by the BMO Financial Group Economics Department.
"The Ontario economy is expected to grow 2.7 per cent this year compared to the national rate of 3.1 per cent," said Paul Ferley, Assistant Chief Economist, BMO Financial Group. "However, growth should rise to 3.0 per cent in 2007 and subsequent years.

New motor vehicle sales for May 2006
New motor vehicle sales weakened somewhat in May, declining 1.0%. This came on the heels of a 0.7% drop in April. Consumers drove 135,618 new vehicles off dealer lots in May, down almost 1,400 vehicles from the previous month.

Canada's international transactions in securities May 2006
Canadian acquisitions of foreign securities amounted to $10.0 billion in May, the third highest on record. This was fuelled by exceptional purchases of foreign equities totalling $5.9 billion. Meanwhile, non-residents stepped up their buying of Canadian securities to $5.7 billion worth, an 18-month high.

Survey: Not Describing Results Top Portfolio Pitfall When Showcasing Creative Work
TORONTO - A compelling portfolio can open doors to new career opportunities, but a poorly developed one may irritate rather than impress potential employers. Thirty-eight per cent of advertising and marketing executives polled said they are bothered most by portfolios that fail to demonstrate the business value each piece provides. Lack of organization was the second most common complaint, cited by 31 per cent of respondents.

Movie theatres and drive-ins 2004/2005
Movie attendance rebounded slightly in 2004/2005 as more Canadians went to both movie theatres and drive-ins, and the industry enjoyed growth in total revenues, profits and profit margin. Movie theatres and drive-ins combined sold 120.3 million tickets, up a slight 0.5% from the previous year, according to new data from the Motion Picture Theatres Survey. The recovery helped take the sting out of a 4.6% decline in attendance in 2003/2004. But attendance in 2004/2005 was still 4.1% lower than it was in 2002/2003, which was the highest since 1960.

Quarterly Retail Commodity Survey First quarter 2006
Since the beginning of 2005 and continuing into the first quarter of 2006, rising fuel prices at the pump have caused consumers to spend proportionately more of their retail dollar on automotive fuels, oils and additives. Consumers spent $8.3 billion on automotive fuels, oils and additives in retail stores in the first quarter of 2006, up 14.2% over the same quarter last year. This was due in part to an 11.2% increase in the price of gasoline over the same period.

Survey Finds Many Employers Taking Steps to Alleviate Impact of High Gas Prices on Staff
TORONTO - Professionals who are feeling pain at the pump may find help from their employers. Eighty-two per cent of executives polled by Robert Half International Inc. said their firms are taking action to reduce the impact of higher gas prices on their teams. The most common changes reported include increasing expense guidelines for employee-incurred mileage (cited by 62 per cent of respondents), allowing staff to telecommute more frequently (32 per cent) and allowing employees to work from offices closer to home (25 per cent).
