Toronto - Bell Globemedia (BGM) announced August 30 that it has completed the closing of its new ownership structure. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved the new ownership structure on July 21st. On August 18th a positive decision was received from the Competition Bureau allowing the transaction to close as filed. These decisions clear the way for BGM to implement the changes to its ownership structure announced on December 2nd of last year, including the investment by each of Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) and Torstar Corporation.

The economy slowed in the second quarter as real gross domestic product (GDP) advanced 0.5%, following a robust 0.9% increase in the first quarter. Canada's balance of international payments - Second quarter 2006

Canada's current account surplus with the rest of the world, on a seasonally adjusted basis, decreased $4.0 billion in the second quarter to $4.2 billion. This was the second consecutive important decrease in the surplus after it had reached a peak at the end of 2005. As in the previous quarter, most of the decline came from a lower surplus on trade in goods.

Crude oil and natural gas: Supply and disposition - June 2006

The production of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons rose 1.2% in June from the same period last year. This increase was a result of recovered synthetic production levels after a fire at a major oil refinery last year. The production of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons declined 3.8% in June from the previous month. This was the result of declining Alberta synthetic crude production in June, and a major turnaround at an oil sands field in Alberta.

TORONTO - Rising gas prices have many professionals considering telecommuting as an economical work option, but spending too much time working from home can mean saying goodbye to the corner office. We have all been following the events in Caledonia and the associated court proceedings with great interest. As you are aware, I am especially concerned about the breakdown of the Rule of Law that we have witnessed in Caledonia. This past Friday, August 25, 2006, the Court of Appeal for Ontario granted a stay with respect to the injunction issued by Justice Marshall against protestors occupying the Douglas Creek Estates. Fast-growing GM trees could take root as future energy source

A tree that can reach 90 feet in six years and be grown as a row crop on fallow farmland could represent a major replacement for fossil fuels.
Purdue University researchers are using genetic tools in an effort to design trees that readily and inexpensively can yield the substances needed to produce alternative transportation fuel. The scientists are focused on a compound in cell walls called lignin that contributes to plants' structural strength, but which hinders extraction of cellulose. Cellulose is the sugar-containing component needed to make the alternative fuel ethanol.

Payroll employment, earnings and hours June 2006

The average weekly earnings of payroll employees fell $2.89 to $747.16 (seasonally adjusted) in June, down 0.4% from May but up 3.8% from the beginning of the year. This annual rate of change is obtained by comparing the average weekly earnings of the first six months of 2006 with the average of the same months of 2005.
