Record ethanol production in Iowa predicted for 2006

The state will produce a record 1.5 billion gallons of ethanol in 2006, the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association said Wednesday. Iowa has more ethanol plants than any other state, the association said. The trade group said Iowa ethanol plants will turn out 36 percent more corn-based fuel than last year, when 1.1 billion gallons was made.

No Change to industry's Gross domestic in October 2006

Economic activity remained essentially unchanged in October after contracting 0.4% in September. Both the goods-producing sector and the service sector stood still. Industries related to tourism, such as accommodation and air transportation, benefited from an increase in the number of overnight visitors to Canada. Unlike their performance the previous month, the energy and utilities sectors experienced strong growth.

Alberta Explodes as Canada looks at population for the Third quarter 2006

The population of Alberta, in the midst of an unprecedented economic boom, rose at its fastest quarterly pace in 25 years between July and September. Alberta's population grew by 1.12% during the third quarter to reach 3,413,500 as of October 1, 2006. This rate of growth was more than three times the 0.33% increase in Canada's total population.

At March 31, 2006, the federal government's net financial debt (defined as the excess of liabilities over financial assets) decreased to $514.1 billion, a 1.8% or $9.3 billion decrease from March 31, 2005. An increase of $2.7 billion in financial assets and a decrease of $6.5 billion in liabilities explain this decline.

Life expectancy in Canada for both sexes combined surpassed 80 years for the first time in 2004, increasing from 79.9 years to 80.2.

Between 1979 and 2004, life expectancy among men rose 6.4 years, while among women, it increased only 3.8 years. Life expectancy rose in 2004 for both sexes, but the growth was stronger among men. For men, life expectancy increased by 0.4 years to 77.8 years, while for women, it went up by only 0.2 years to 82.6.

OTTAWA - The findings of a new Conference Board study, released December 19, 2006, challenge a widely-held view that expanding roads and highways inevitably leads to more traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. CFOs report on first-quarter 2007 financial hiring outlook

TORONTO - Financial executives expect to continue hiring in the first quarter of the new year but at a slightly slower pace than during the fourth quarter of 2006, according to the most recent Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index. Five per cent of chief financial officers (CFOs) polled said they plan to add full-time accounting and finance employees, while 3 per cent expect staff reductions. The net 2 per cent increase is one point below the fourth-quarter projection. The majority of respondents, 91 per cent, expect no change in hiring activity.

TORONTO - On Sunday December 17, 2006, the Canadian Association of Income Funds (CAIF) expressed their disappointment at the piecemeal approach of the guidelines released by the Department of Finance late Friday night.
