Waterloo to stand up to make poverty history and attempt to set world record
Members of Waterloo Region are invited to gather on Sunday, October 15th to attempt to set a Guinness World Record for standing up to make poverty history worldwide by 2015. Locally hosted by the Laurier Students' Public Interest Research Group (LSPIRG), Opportunities Waterloo Region and the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank, the Stand Up to Make Poverty History campaign is being held in hundreds of locations across the world and is meant to pressure politicians to put poverty elimination on their agendas.

New motor vehicle sales August 2006
Continued demand for trucks drove new motor vehicles 2.8% higher in August, extending the rebound that began in July. However, this rebound looks set to soften as preliminary sales data from the auto industry indicate the number of new motor vehicles sold in September is estimated to have slipped about 4%, due to a fallback in truck sales.

Ontario slips to last place on growth, says RBC Economics
TORONTO - Ontario's economic outlook has weakened with expected growth of 1.5 per cent in 2006 and two per cent in 2007, according to a new provincial forecast released today by RBC. "Ontario's economic growth forecast has weakened and is facing further downside risks," said Craig Wright, vice-president and chief economist, RBC. "The economy isn't far from being at a standstill despite the drop in natural gas and oil prices, which should both serve to stimulate growth."

Laurier faculty of music to donate concert revenues to the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony
WATERLOO The faculty of music at Wilfrid Laurier University opens its ensemble concert season on October 14 and 15 with the WLU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by professor Paul Pulford. In light of the financial difficulties faced by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra (KWSO), which were announced last week, the faculty of music will donate the revenues from its two opening orchestra concerts to the KWSO. Laurier’s president’s office will match the revenues.

New Housing Price Index - August 2006
The cost of new housing rose substantially in August, largely as a result of significant gains in Alberta. The New Housing Price Index was up 1.5% in August to 145.7 (1997=100), eclipsing the 1.1% increase registered in July. Compared to one year ago, contractors' selling prices increased 12.1%.

Housing starts move lower in September
OTTAWA - The seasonally adjusted annual rate(1) of housing starts was 211,300 units in September, down slightly from 216,600 units in August, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). "The decline in housing starts is attributable to a decline in the multiple starts, which reached their lowest level since July 2004. For a second consecutive month, single-detached starts edged higher." said Bob Dugan, Chief Economist at CMHC's Market Analysis Centre.

Employment edged up slightly in September (+16,000), following three months of little change. The unemployment rate dipped 0.1 percentage points to 6.4% in September, while the share of the population which was employed remained near record highs. Since the beginning of the year, employment has increased by 210,000 (+1.3%).

Go Eng Girl engineering awareness event to be held at UW on Oct. 14
WATERLOO- Go Eng Girl, an annual event seeking to encourage young women to become interested in engineering, will be held at the University of Waterloo on Saturday, Oct. 14.
It's part of a provincial initiative at universities offering programs in engineering to host these events for girls in Grades 7 to 10.

Canada's SCISAT satellite explains 2006 ozone-layer depletion
LONGUEUIL, QC - A surprising new study finds that high-speed winds above the northern hemisphere have a much greater impact on ozone levels than was previously thought. Scientists used data collected in 2006 by Canada's SCISAT.
