UW researcher studies why some businesses succeed, while others fail

WATERLOO - Why do some businesses succeed, while others fail? That's the type of key question being studied by University of Waterloo researcher Moren Lévesque. A professor of management sciences, Lévesque also holds the Canada Research Chair in Innovation and Technical Entrepreneurship, funded last spring by the federal government. Hog inventories Third quarter 2006

Hog inventories appear to have tumbled for the fifth consecutive quarter, as prices remained low and disease caused havoc for many producers in Eastern Canada. Farmers reported 14.1 million hogs on their farms as of October 1, 2006, according to a survey taken in early September. This was down 2.4% from the second quarter of 2006, and 5.3% below the same date last year.

DALSA Third Quarter 2006 Results

Waterloo - DALSA Corporation, an international high performance semiconductor and electronics company, today reported revenue of $47.4 million in the third quarter of 2006 and net income of $3.3 million or $0.17 per share, diluted. Revenues for the first nine months of the year were $143.0 million, up 14.5% from $124.9 million in the same period in 2005 and net earnings were $9.9 million, or $0.52 per share, diluted, compared to $7.7 million, or $0.43 per share, diluted.

Return on Equity increases to 14.4%

TORONTO - Sun Life Financial Inc. announced record earnings of $541 million or $0.94 per share for the quarter ended September 30, 2006. Earnings per share (EPS) were up 14.6% (19.5% in constant currency) over operating EPS(1) in the third quarter of 2005. Return on equity (ROE) grew to 14.4% for the quarter, up from operating ROE(1) of 13.1% in the third quarter of 2005.

Manpower Professional Survey Finds 24 Per Cent of Employers in Canada Experiencing Wage Inflation Due to Talent Shortages

Toronto – Twenty-six per cent of Canadian employers are having difficulty filling permanent professional1 positions due to a lack of available talent, which is threatening growth plans. Twenty-four per cent of employers are paying higher wages for the same positions compared to the previous year due to professional talent shortages, according to a Manpower Professional Survey.

Retail trade August 2006

Retailers posted widespread gains in August, led by a second consecutive advance in new car dealer sales. In total, retail sales advanced 1.0% to $33.4 billion in August. Except for three months of slight declines, retail sales have been growing strongly so far in 2006.
