CAW Donates to 44 Food Banks Across Canada

TORONTO - The CAW is contributing $135,000 to food banks from Newfoundland to British Columbia, as part of an annual holiday donation.

CAW President Buzz Hargrove said the union provides this important support to food banks and is determined to help those in need as part of its ongoing commitment to the concept of social unionism.

"In a country where so much wealth is being created each day we must remember that many people and many families are not sharing in that prosperity. It's not acceptable that some are being left behind. No one should go hungry in this country during the holiday season or at any other time," Hargrove said.

Hunger Count 2007, a national survey of foodbanks by the Canadian Association of Food Banks, took a snapshot of hunger issues affecting each province and territory. While the survey found differences for each area it also found some common threads - "inadequate minimum wage and social assistance rates, followed closely by high rents, are among the primary reasons for the sustained demand for emergency food assistance."

In addition to the $135,000 donation, which comes from the CAW Social Justice Fund and CAW Council, many CAW local unions do a lot of community work and provide additional financial assistance to local food banks.
