CAW calls for fair deal for Ontario in House
TORONTO - On behalf of the CAW's 260,000 members across the country, CAW President Buzz Hargrove is demanding the fair distribution of new seats in the House of Commons. Recently, the 800 delegates to CAW Council endorsed a resolution calling for the federal government to implement a readjustment formula for new ridings that treats all provinces the same.
"At a time of rapid change and growth in several parts of our country, it
is critical that any revisions to the parliament's makeup ensure the fair and
balanced representation of all citizens," said Hargrove.
Under the proposed formula, the number of seats will increase from 308 to
330, with an additional 22 seats to be allocated to provinces with the fastest
growing populations (British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario).
If implemented the average riding in Ontario would include 115,000
citizens, substantially less than the 105,000 citizens included in ridings in
Alberta and British Columbia. This would shortchange Ontario by 10
parliamentary seats.
