Ontario will invest $5 million to upgrade science research facilities at Carleton University
OTTAWA - Carleton will use these funds to renovate the 42-year-old chemistry building, modernize laboratories and bring equipment up to current safety standards. This renovated facility will also accommodate a new food science and nutrition program. Carleton is also receiving $7.3 million under campus renewal to improve energy efficiency and campus safety.
The funding is part of the $1.4-billion investment in strategic infrastructure announced in the Fall Economic Statement which is aimed at:
- Making Ontario's economy more competitive
- Stimulating job creation and growth across the province.

said Training, Colleges and Universities Minister John Milloy.
"This investment is a major step forward toward improving the quality of
postsecondary education in Ottawa. Carleton is an important part of our

"This announcement shows that the government values and understands the
central role of universities in Ontario's future prosperity and economic
competitiveness," said Samy Mahmoud, Carleton University's President and
Vice-Chancellor pro tempore.

The government's Fall Economic Statement announced a $1.4-billion
investment in strategic infrastructure to encourage economic activity, create
short-term jobs, help municipalities and enhance Ontario's competitiveness.
At Carleton University, Ontario is investing $5 million to renovate and
upgrade the 42-year-old Steacie chemistry building. This project will see a
number of laboratories modernized to optimize efficiency and flexibility and
will bring fume hoods up to current safety standards. The renewed facility
will also accommodate a new food science and nutrition program.
Students will benefit from access to state-of-the-art research and
laboratory facilities and from working in a modern teaching environment.
The Fall Economic Statement also included $200 million in funding for
campus renewal projects that improve energy efficiency and campus safety and a
variety of infrastructure renewal projects. Carleton University is receiving
$7.3 million under campus renewal.
Including today's announcement and campus renewal funding, Carleton
University has received more than $26 million from the Ontario Government to
support capital projects since 2003-04.
INVESTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE
This funding is part of the government's ReNew Ontario multi-year
$30-billion infrastructure investment strategy. Other recent investments by
the government in Ontario's vital postsecondary system include:

- A $365-million investment in the 2007 Budget to support quality
improvements at colleges and universities.
- $40 million provided to colleges and universities annually through
the Facilities Renewal Program.
- $30 million provided in 2006 through the Economic Stimulus Package to
colleges in areas of the province where economic growth was slower
than anticipated.
- $180 million provided between 2003 and 2006 for new buildings and
renovations, providing spaces for 21,000 more students.
