Fraser Institute Launches New Research Centre for Mining
TORONTO - The Fraser Institute today announced the creation of its new Global Centre for Mining Studies to conduct research into public policy and the economic, environmental and social impacts of mining.
The centre will undertake fact-based research on policy frameworks that can deliver the greatest economic and social benefit to those affected by mining while maintaining a profitable industry that continues to invest and create opportunity. The centre will examine issues related to best practices in developing projects to the benefit of the local economy.
"Mining is a key industry that offers many developing nations a path out of poverty and an opportunity to build a sustainable economy," said Mark Mullins, Fraser Institute executive director.
"But the wrong policies can deter mining investment and stifle economic activity. With this new research centre, we will explore the types of policies that encourage mining as an economic activity that can also provide environmental and social benefits."
The Global Centre for Mining Studies is being launched with the support of the Aurea Foundation. The centre will be based in The Fraser Institute's Toronto office and overseen by Fred McMahon, Fraser Institute Director of Centre for Globalization Studies.
