Message from the WLU President
WLU Academic Staff on Strike
Waterloo - With regret, I inform members of our internal and external communities that effective 6:01 a.m., March 19, 2008, contract academic staff at Wilfrid Laurier University are on strike. The university has been doing everything within its power to arrive at a fair and responsible settlement but ultimately negotiations reached an impasse.
I believe Laurier’s final offer is fair and responsible and takes into consideration both the short- and the long-term well-being of our students, staff, full-time faculty and contract academic staff. The university’s final offer recognizes the need for Laurier to be competitive with respect to the compensation of its CAS members. It also focuses on ensuring academic quality and the ongoing viability of Laurier by acknowledging the budgetary and other challenges we face.
For information on how the current compensation package compares with other Ontario universities please see the comparison chart. Highlights of the university’s final offer will also be available for viewing.
Laurier remains remains open and operational during this job action.
This website contains:
Information regarding rights and responsibilities of all members of the university community during the strike, and
Specific information for students regarding classes and exams.
I want to assure all students, staff and members of the faculty that the university is willing to return immediately to the bargaining table. We remain hopeful that a concerted effort by both parties will lead to an early settlement. Our focus remains on reaching a fair and responsible agreement as quickly as possible, to enable campus and academic life to return to normal.
Dr. Max Blouw
President & Vice-Chancellor
Wilfrid Laurier University
