To Mark Fraud Prevention Month, NCR Adds Two More Security Inks to Its Sales Receipt Paper Roll Line

Specialized inks for NCR Security POS Paper Rolls are invisible to the naked eye and make it difficult for criminals to copy sales receipts

MISSISSAUGA, ON – North America’s retail losses from organized crime activities are reaching the $40 billion mark Annually, and growing. Estimates indicate that retailers lose more than $8 million a day to store theft. While the use of advanced technology to commit fraud has been one of organized crime’s tricks of the trade, <http://www.ncr.com> NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) is taking advantage of its own technology expertise to help retailers reduce inventory shrinkage through sales receipt fraud. NCR today announced that its Systemedia Division has added two new security inks to the NCR Security Point-of-Sale (POS) Paper Roll portfolio. The world’s largest provider of POS paper rolls, NCR Systemedia is the first company to develop a comprehensive paper roll inking solution designed to help retailers track, deter and catch POS receipt fraud, specifically return fraud. And with NCR Security POS Paper Rolls, the return on investment can be as little as 30 to 90 days.

“One major retailer has reported that one roll of counterfeit receipts could amount to a loss of $10,000 dollars,” said Dianne Bateman, director of Systemedia for NCR in Canada. “With the latest enhancements to the NCR Security POS Paper Roll solution, we can now offer retailers eight different security inks – each one designed to make it more difficult for criminals to copy or manipulate POS sales receipts.”

The two new security inks are:

* Uncoated Side Security Ink. With this ink, the security paper roll features clear-to-colour ink that prints white but turns a colour when scratched. The solution is easy to implement and does not require any special detection devices at the POS.

* Coated Side Security Ink (NCR Secure 41). This security paper roll features white ink printed on the coated side of thermal paper, and is well suited for NCR’s patented two-sided thermal (2ST™) applications. The patented security ink for thermal paper contains four different features including a faux watermark that cannot be copied.

How does sales receipt fraud work? Here is one example.

Many stores have flexible or “no hassle” return policies which the criminals may exploit by using sophisticated technology to copy and print seemingly authentic-looking counterfeit receipts. The thieves then steal items from the retailer and later return the shoplifted goods along with a fraudulent receipt to the retailer’s customer service centre for a “refund”.

The full line of NCR Security Point-of-Sale (POS) Paper Rolls is available now by calling 1-800-268-2034.
