Museum Speaker Series

University of Guelph professor takes part in Goodall experience

Ontario Veterinary College’s Dr. Cate Dewey to speak in Museum series

Kitchener, ON – The Speaker Series launched by The Children’s Museum several weeks ago has been a successful component of the Museum’s overall Jane Goodall experience by serving to engage people of all ages and backgrounds. This weekend’s speaker has a special connection to kids in Africa and will share her personal experiences from visiting Western Kenya.

The Chair of the Population Medicine Department in the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, Dr. Cate Dewey, will be speaking to families visiting the Museum this Saturday on three topics, the first of which begins at 1:00pm and looks closely at life of woman living as subsistence farmers in Kenya. This will be followed by Dr. Dewey sharing photographs and stories of the joy and laughter of children living in rural Kenya and finally, a slide show demonstrating the positive impact Canadian assistance has made on children in Bukati.

The Speaker Series, which was developed in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibition, Discovering Chimpanzees, is a way for the Museum to further reach out and connect with university students and adults. The exhibit, which appeals to young and old alike, has many layered in components, such as the Speaker Series, and offers diverse and in depth programming.

Dr. Dewey is one of several academics participating in the Series. Other Speakers, who primarily come from the local universities, are presenting or have presented on a range of topics that include animal self-medication, biology, environmental conservation and the research of Jane Goodall. Details on times and locations can be found online at TheChildrensMuseum.ca.

The Speaker Series will culminate with a lecture by Dr. Jane Goodall herself at the Centre in the Square on Monday, May 12th.
