Waterloo Resident has better solution for pothole repair

Waterloo – April 22, 2008 Fed up with dodging potholes, a Waterloo resident and inventor has come up with an effective, safer way of repairing potholes in Waterloo region.

The Pavement Edger, developed in 1998 has been used in other municipalities such as New Brunswick to successfully and safely repair potholes, wheel rutting, and longitudinal cracking. “The product mounts easily to the side of snow plow trucks and requires only one person to operate,” explains Doug Bergman, inventor of the Pavement Edger. “The operator remains in the safety of the truck and simply pulls up to the pothole aligns the Pavement Edger behind the pothole, hydraulically opens the door to allow cold or hot mix to run out. The driver then closes the door, levels and packs the patch with the back tires of the truck and moves on to the next hole”.

Currently, local municipalities require three or more staff to manually pack down cold mix asphalt to repair. This process is both time consuming and dangerous for road repair crews. The Pavement Edger saves taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars annually.

A better patch to potholes requires less maintenance in the future and increases the safety of road crews. It continues to save municipalities money as it reduces the liability costs that may be incurred when vehicles are damaged by potholes that are improperly repaired or not repaired in a timely manner.

Currently, municipalities in Waterloo region are facing hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair the pothole damage created by an extra-long winter. The Pavement Edger may be the simple and economical solution for municipalities to consider for this and future pothole repair seasons.
