COMMUNITY INVITED TO DISCUSS LEARNING AND LITERACY ISSUES IN K-W

Waterloo – Friends of The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF) are invited to attend the Annual Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at The Children’s Museum.

"Kitchener-Waterloo's strengths are well known and celebrated by many. Yet, discussion of our collective challenges is somewhat more subdued," says Cathy Brothers, Executive Director of Catholic Family Counselling Centre and keynote speaker for The KWCF Town Hall Meeting. "One of the important issues facing our community right now is how low we rank in literacy and learning. Many of our residents are barely meeting the minimum literacy requirements needed for a modern economy. Literacy and learning impact upon so much in our lives, especially poverty. With everyone’s help, we can break the cycle of poverty and reach out to those currently excluded from the benefits of this fine community. K-W has a fantastic record for responding to challenges and opportunities; it is important that we focus attention on improving these much-needed and important life skills."

The Town Hall Meeting is held annually and focuses on identifying and communicating important leadership issues to the community. “Education is the key that opens many doors, including the doors of creativity and prosperity. This year’s Town Hall will provide a fantastic opportunity for our citizens to learn more about literacy and learning issues facing our community and provide suggestions on how concerned citizens can get involved in the solutions,” says Rosemary Smith, CEO of KWCF.

When: Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Time: 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Location: The Children’s Museum, 10 King Street West, Kitchener
