38th Junior Achievement Annual Future Unlimited Banquet a Great Success
Waterloo Region - Junior Achievement hosted its 38th Annual Future Unlimited Banquet on May 6th at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Kitchener. Approximately 175 attendees were on hand to celebrate the success of this year’s Company Program participants.
The Company Program is Junior Achievement’s longest running program and was introduced in Waterloo Region in 1970. The program is designed to inspire high school students to develop business and leadership skills and consider a career as an entrepreneur. Students from across Waterloo Region meet weekly in the evening for 3 hours to plan and operate short term businesses. Students learn the complete business cycle from planning and raising capital to producing a product, selling and then eventually closing the company down and determining if a profit was made.
Through out the process students develop and refine their business and leadership skills. Participants have the opportunity to hold management roles in their student-run enterprises and get the first hand experience of the challenges and rewards of running a small business. Throughout the process, a troop of 50 volunteer consultants from local businesses donate their time and expertise to mentor the students as they make their tough business decisions.
“Students participating in this year’s program have certainly demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit that defines the Waterloo Region” says Christine Dwyer, Program Manager for Junior Achievement of the Waterloo Region. “Our challenge now will be to convince these bright young people to start their future ventures in our community.”
