Nuclear Appointment

New President — Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

OTTAWA – The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, announced May 9, 2008, the appointment of Dr. Michael Binder as President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Dr. Binder will serve a five-year term.

"I'm very pleased to confirm Dr. Michael Binder as President of the CNSC," said Minister Lunn. "Dr. Binder has extensive experience as a senior executive in the federal public service and is the right person to lead the CNSC into the future."

Dr. Michael Binder was appointed interim-President of the CNSC on January 15, 2008. He was previously Assistant Deputy Minister of Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications at Industry Canada. In this position, he was responsible for overseeing Canada's transition to a network economy and promoting the development and use of world-class information and communications technologies. His earlier public service experience includes the Office of the Comptroller General of Canada, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Ministry of State for Urban Affairs, and the Defence Research Board. Dr. Binder has a Doctorate in Physics from the University of Alberta.
