Home Hardware Gardening Guru Mark Cullen Sets Off On Second Annual Cross-Country Tour

Canada's best-known green thumb offers top five trends in Canadian gardening for 2008

ST. JACOBS - This spring garden enthusiasts from across the country will have the chance to see Canada's favorite gardening expert and television personality, Mark Cullen, as he delivers helpful lawn and gardening tips, tricks and techniques.

Home Hardware, in partnership with Mark Cullen, will host events at four locations across Canada during the highly anticipated second annual cross-country tour. Beginning on the west coast and heading east, Cullen will offer the latest trends and products in lawn care and gardening, specific to each region's climate and soil type.

"After the long and unpredictable winter we experienced this year, Canadians have never been more excited for gardening season to begin," said Mark Cullen. "But now that the spring has finally arrived, amateur and seasoned gardeners alike are having some difficulty getting started. While many of us have a vision of what we want, most of us need some advice to help pull it all together. Equipped with the right knowledge and tools anyone can create their ideal outdoor living space to share with friends and family."

Cullen recently revealed his picks for the top five trends in Canadian gardening this year. During his tour he will provide tips and products to help gardeners successfully achieve each of these inspired new trends. <<

Mark Cullen's Top 5 Trends in Canadian Gardening for 2008:
----------------------------------------------------------

- Environment. Canadian gardeners are more eco-conscious than ever before. They want good looking gardens but not at the cost of the environment.

- Small is beautiful. More and more Canadians are moving into larger houses on smaller lots. The Canadian Home Builders Association has determined that average new home sizes continue to grow, while average lot sizes are being reduced. This latest trend creates interesting challenges and opportunities for gardeners.

- Gardening for health. Experts at Gardening Life magazine have determined that the number one reason Canadians garden is "to feel good." Whether we are trying to get the blood flowing or relax after a tough day, Canada's favorite outdoor activity provides a healthy solution for both.

- Lifestyle. The "garden" is now part of the entire decorating package that includes bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and more. As Canadians continue to bring the indoors outdoors, Home Hardware Dealers are providing an unprecedented variety of plant materials, garden furniture and entertainment features to choose from.

- Containers. Due to inclement weather Canadians are familiar with keeping planted pots, window boxes or containers of some kind in their homes. Recently, a trend towards outdoor containers has emerged and perennials and shrubs are being used to dress up patios, decks, walkways and virtually any hard surfaces. >>

Cullen is set to visit four locations across Canada beginning in May and ending in June. The tour, which begins in Penticton, British Columbia, will also visit: Lloydminster, Alberta; Renfrew, Ontario; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. All proceeds from each event, collected through in-store ticket sales, will be donated to various local charities by Home Hardware Dealers in each community.

"Home Hardware Dealers are thrilled to be involved again with this year's tour and look forward to helping their customers apply Mark's advice to their own gardens," said Rob Wallace, Public Relations Manager, Home Hardware Stores Limited. "Combining Mark's expertise and passion for gardening with the top-quality tools and services in our lawn and garden centres allows Home Hardware stores to provide customers with everything they'll need to achieve their gardening goals this season."

Home Hardware currently offers Mark's Choice, a line of premium lawn and garden product developed exclusively for the retailer by Cullen. New products have been rolled out for the 2008 gardening season and Cullen will feature many of them throughout his tour.
