Attawapiskat evacuees arrive in Waterloo Region

Waterloo Region – Evacuees from the flood-threatened Attawapiskat area of James Bay have begun to arrive in Waterloo Region. Approximately 118 evacuees have already been transported to University of Waterloo residences. More are expected on Tuesday.

The Regional Emergency Control Group met today to discuss details of their accommodations.

As an administrative measure, Regional Chair Ken Seiling officially declared an emergency relating to the accommodation of evacuees. Such a declaration provides protection for emergency relief volunteers who will be involved in assisting the Region in hosting evacuees.

“I am pleased that staff from the Region of Waterloo, the City of Waterloo, and several community organizations came together on very short notice to coordinate a well organized and seamless welcome for the evacuees,” said Regional Chair Ken Seiling.

"I am very proud that through accommodations at the University of Waterloo we are able to provide temporary refuge to these people who have been forced to leave their homes, said Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran. “This is not an easy time for the Attawapiskat residents who are in Waterloo. I have every confidence that our community will do everything we can to support them while they are here."
