Kitchener welcomes the arrival of the Memorial Cup on May 15
KITCHENER - For the third time in their history, the Kitchener Rangers are hosting the prestigious Memorial Cup tournament and the City of Kitchener is ready to join them in welcoming the historic hardware on May 15.
When the cup comes to town, it will be escorted atop a military tank by Canadian Forces members up Gaukel Street from Joseph Street and will remain on display for a celebration at Civic Square, Kitchener City Hall.
Mayor Carl Zehr and the Hon. Greg Thompson, minister of veteran affairs, will be on hand to officially welcome the cup and participate in the procession and celebration, which takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Other local dignitaries, war veterans and the Kitchener Rangers will be in attendance to welcome the cup alongside the community.
"It is certainly an honour for the City of Kitchener to welcome the Memorial Cup and to host the nation's most prestigious junior hockey tournament," said Mayor Zehr. "We take great pride in celebrating the cup's arrival and we wish the Kitchener Rangers all the best as they compete to keep it right here at home."
Following a brief ceremony to officially welcome the cup to Kitchener, there will be a private luncheon for the war veterans who participate in the parade. Grade 5 students from Driftwood Public School will present each guest with a poppy.
A barbecue and the cutting of the cake will be held for the public on Civic Square during the event. Entertainment will be provided by the Twin City Harmonizers and Shane Guse.
The 90th edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup will take place from Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 25, 2008. All games will be played at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex.
