Sears Canada warehouse employees vote to join United Steelworkers

TORONTO - United Steelworkers' (USW) Ontario/Atlantic Director Wayne Fraser announced Wednesday that about 700 workers at the Sears Canada Inc. warehouse in Vaughan, ON, will become USW members following a Tuesday vote in favour of the union.

quot;Sears employees voted for USW representation because they want a real voice in their workplace," said Fraser. "Unlike the recent Magna deal, Sears employees will have the right to elect union stewards and the right to elect bargaining committee members. The strong vote in favour of the USW gives them a solid base for upcoming bargaining with Sears Canada. They want to build a good collective agreement."

Fraser added that the right to strike is also protected. "These new USW members will have the right to engage in free collective bargaining. It's the way things are supposed to work."
