Ontario Water
Barrie benefits from increased investment in water project
BARRIE - Residents of Barrie will benefit from cleaner, safer drinking water through an increased investment under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program. Patrick Brown, MP for Barrie; the Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of Culture, Minister responsible for Seniors and MPP for Barrie; and Dave Aspden, Mayor of the City of Barrie, made the announcement today.
As a result of an increase in eligible project costs for the upgrading of
13 wells, the governments of Canada and Ontario are each contributing up to
$1,781,671 to the project. This represents a total combined federal-provincial
increase of $171,958. The City of Barrie is investing the remaining one third
of the project's total eligible cost of $5,345,013.
The improvements included the elimination of bacterial contamination
pathways; the installation of continuous chlorine residual analysers,
turbidity meters, standby power generators, ultraviolet disinfection system,
and the provision of spill containment on the City's groundwater supply
system. The City of Barrie also constructed a new well complete with treatment
facilities.
The upgrades are required to bring the municipal water system into
compliance with the Ontario Drinking Water Systems Regulation and improve the
overall quality of life in Barrie. "Green" municipal infrastructure is a
priority for the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.
"As a former City Councillor, I understand and appreciate the financial
constraints of municipal budgets," said MP Brown. "That is why I am pleased
that the Government of Canada is providing additional support for this
important initiative in Barrie."
"The McGuinty government is committed to making our cities better, more
prosperous places to live," said Minister Carroll. "We are pleased that the
federal government is now matching our previously announced increased
investment to ensure that the residents of Barrie will benefit from cleaner
and safer drinking water."
"The City of Barrie is pleased to be in partnership with the governments
of Canada and Ontario," said Mayor Aspden. "The additional funding is
appreciated and will help ensure the safe and reliable delivery of drinking
water to the residents of our community continues and that Barrie remains at
the forefront of environmental issues."
This is one of a series of matching federal and provincial investments to
help municipalities protect the health and safety of their residents through
essential infrastructure projects totalling more than $1.3 billion to date in
Ontario.
