Anastasia - a brand new ballet by Ballet Jörgen Canada
Kitchener - Ballet Jörgen Canada, Canada’s Local Ballet Company is thrilled to announce the Kitchener-Waterloo premiere of a brand new ballet, Anastasia. The fate of the youngest daughter of the last Czar of Russia is a tale shrouded in mystery. Set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution that transformed an Empire and shook the world, we follow Anastasia as she moves from the ballrooms of St. Petersburg to captivity and beyond. Join Ballet Jörgen Canada at Centre In The Square on Saturday, March 1st at 8 pm for a night of compelling dance.
“The mystique that still surrounds the fate of Anastasia, set against the backdrop of the Russian revolution, makes this a fascinating story to explore. The fact that her family was closely associated with the evolution of ballet as an art form through their personal patronage of the Imperial Ballet adds particular poignancy to telling this story through the medium of ballet. Anastasia will be Ballet Jörgen Canada’s largest undertaking to date and a significant commitment to the development of new ballet productions for Canadian stages. “ says Bengt Jörgen, Co-founder, Artistic Director and CEO for Ballet Jörgen Canada.
An original, full-sized symphonic score has been commissioned from Russian-Canadian composer Ivan Barbotin, who has previously created scores for Ballet Jörgen Canada dance works such as The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Velveteen Rabbit. The compelling story of Anastasia unfolds across regal celebrations in lavish ballrooms, gatherings of fierce revolutionaries and tender moments of romance. This brand new ballet is Ballet Jörgen Canada’s most ambitious work to date, combining the choreography of Bengt Jörgen, the original lighting design of Dora Award winning Bonnie Beecher and the sets and costumes of Canadian theatre designer Sue LePage. Those who have enjoyed our acclaimed Romeo & Juliet and Nutcracker performances at Centre In The Square will find Anastasia an equal delight.
Celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, Ballet Jörgen Canada is recognized for ballets that combine innovation, warmth, humour and beauty. We are the 5th largest dance company in Canada, and the only Canadian ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works. Bengt Jörgen, artistic director, choreographer, and CEO of the company has created over 30 ballets that have premiered nationally and internationally. Touring audiences for Ballet Jörgen Canada are the second largest in the country with 50,000 to 60,000 patrons annually. From Salt Spring Island to St John’s, Newfoundland, Ballet Jörgen Canada is the most widely toured of Canada’s professional ballet companies -a true national treasure.
