Social Entrepreneurship
A step forward in changing the world
Kielburger to kick off second annual social entrepreneurship conference in Waterloo
Waterloo For a weekend in November, promising and existing social leaders will converge in Waterloo, Ontario to learn, discuss, and further their individual quests to change the world. Free the Children Chief Executive Director Marc Kielburger will help launch the weekend with his keynote lecture at the 2008 Annual Conference on Social Entrepreneurship. From November 14-16, 2008, the Laurel Centre for Social Entrepreneurship will host their second annual conference, an event that will bring together students and practitioners of social entrepreneurship for a three-day conference jointly hosted by the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, both in Waterloo, ON.
Through a series of workshops, keynote lectures, panel discussions, and an exhibition, the conference, under the title "Change the World," will explore the advancement of social entrepreneurship both internationally and here at home, featuring the three key themes of health leadership, education, and international development. The Laurel Centre was founded in late 2007 after the success of the first Waterloo Conference on Social Entrepreneurship, which saw more than 200 people come together from around the world to collaborate on the bridging of the passion for social change together with a business-minded discipline.
Marc Kielburger will present the conference's opening keynote address at 7:00 p.m. on the Friday. Since its founding in 1995, Free The Children has become the world's leading youth-driven charity, inspiring an entire generation to stand up and have their voices heard. Kielburger's lecture will also be open to the public.
Dr. Sue Horton, former VP Academic at Wilfrid Laurier University and current visiting scientist at the Micronutrient Initiative will deliver Saturday's gala keynote address. Other speakers include Dr. Frances Westley, the JW McConnell Chair in Social Innovation at the University of Waterloo; John Baker, CEO of Aperio Inc.; and Cheryl Rose, director of partnerships and projects for UW's Social Innovation Generation group.
Until October 17, students are invited to attend the entire conference for the early-bird price of $30. This fee will rise to $40 after October 17. The cost for community delegates is $90 (prior to October 17) or $100 (after October 17). Students interested in only attending the Kielburger address at 7 p.m. on November 14 may do so for $6; the community price is $15.
