2008 Ontario Innovation Gala names beneficiary of award night proceeds
Partners of the Ontario Innovation Excellence Awards are proud to announce that proceeds of the inaugural Ontario Innovation Excellence Gala will be directed to the University of Waterloo Downtown Kitchener Health Science Campus to fund early stage development in autoimmune disease research.
Waterloo Region (CTT) - Ontario Innovation Excellence Chair/Exchange Publisher Jon Rohr is pleased to announce that proceeds from the Ontario Innovation Excellence Awards (OIE) Gala will be directed to the University of Waterloo Downtown Kitchener Health Science Campus. The funds will support early exploration in autoimmune disease research.
Ontario Innovation Excellence Awards, to be held October 29, 2008, is a gala event celebrating a festival of innovation. One hundred and twenty six nominations are up for 7 awards. Awards are sponsored by RBC Royal Bank; Financial Innovation; Sustainable Development; Strategic Positioning; Intellectual Design; Government Innovation and Non-Government Innovation. A seventh award will be presented to the 2008 Ontario Innovation Excellence "most excellent" Innovation.
Gala ticket sales will provide seed funding, to assist UW in exploring the potential for a concentrated research effort in autoimmune diseases at the new Health Sciences Campus. Autoimmune diseases, which include conditions such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and arthritis, affect the lives of millions of Canadians, and are largely incurable.
The University of Waterloo's recognized ability to attract the best research minds from around the world will be leveraged in this effort to examine the latest discoveries and best thinking on autoimmune diseases, and identify where new and innovative research is most needed.
Dr. Jake Thiessen, Hallman Director of UW's School of Pharmacy and Director of the Health Sciences Campus, says "Autoimmune diseases can be tremendously debilitating and are very diverse. The Health Sciences Campus ,in which this community has invested so generously, will be a uniquely collaborative environment for education, treatment and research. It is therefore a seemingly ideal venue to conduct collaborative, multi-disciplinary research into such challenging disorders."
Plan to attend this historic event and be a community catalyst to another great era in Waterloo Region's future. Individuals, corporations or institutions that purchase tables of eight will be featured in Exchange Magazine Ontario Innovation Review as catalysts of innovation.
