Nursing Homes Ratify Contract
CAW members ratify contract with Ontario nursing homes
LONDON, ON - Members of the Canadian Auto Workers union ratified a new contract with a consortium of twenty-two nursing homes located throughout southwestern and central Ontario, commonly known as the "Group of 22". Ratification votes were held in various locations over the past two weeks with the final vote held on January 30.
CAW members voted 83 per cent in favour of the new contract, which
includes wage and benefit increases, new provisions that deal with workplace
outbreak protections, workload issues, improvements to the sick leave plan as
well as stronger protection for workers when advocating in the interests of
nursing home residents on issues of quality care among other gains.
"This contract builds on the gains our union has made in other pattern
agreements set in the health care sector," said Nancy McMurphy, CAW National
Executive Board member and President of Local 302. "Our members have made
another step in the right direction to achieve the dignity and full respect
they deserve in this important sector of our economy."
Nursing homes covered under this agreement are located in Wardsville,
Wingham, Simcoe, Parkhill, Chatham, Komoka, Ailsa Craig, Delhi, Exeter, Lion's
Head, Windsor, London, Tillsonburg, Kitchener-Waterloo, Amherstburg, Sarnia,
and Seaforth employing over 1,700 CAW members represented by CAW Locals 2458,
302 and 1106.
"Bargaining with twenty-two individual nursing homes represented by a
consortium of employers is no easy task," said CAW staff representative
Robert Buchanan. "Credit must go to the bargaining committee for doing a
tremendous job in negotiating a very strong settlement for our members."
The number of homes represented in this group has grown sizably over the
years, from thirteen in 2001 to twenty-two in 2008.
