Ontario Invests in New Research Complex at Brock

Ontario Government Supports Students and Research

ST. CATHARINES, ON - Ontario is investing in a new research complex at Brock University. The new Health and Biosciences Research Complex will create a place for leading researchers in health, biosciences and chemistry to explore ideas that will advance human health. Ontario will invest $33.5 million in the project.

"Our government knows that it is today's students who will build Ontario's future economy, and that economy will be increasingly knowledge-based," said John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. "Our investment in this modern resource complex is ensuring that students in the Niagara region are prepared for success in the future while we create new jobs today."

The funding is part of the $1.4 billion investment in strategic infrastructure announced in the Fall Economic Statement which is designed to make Ontario's economy more competitive and stimulate job creation and growth across the province.

The investment in strategic infrastructure also included funding for campus renewal projects. Brock University is receiving more than $4.5 million to improve energy efficiency and campus safety and carry out a variety of infrastructure renewal projects.

"The Niagara Health and Biosciences Research Complex along with the Centre of Innovation for Biomanufacturing will change the face of manufacturing in Ontario by creating a new economic cluster in biomanufacturing and health and wellness in Niagara," says Jack N. Lightstone, President, Brock University. "This significant partnership between Brock, the Ontario government and industry will assist in the province's transition from traditional manufacturing to profitable "green" opportunities, which will create good jobs and keep our graduates at home."

"We're boosting Ontario's competitiveness by building knowledge and skills," said Milloy. "By expanding access to modern research facilities in St. Catharines, we are taking a major step to improving the long-term quality of postsecondary education in Niagara Region, while providing jobs in the short-term."

"These specialized research labs and other new facilities will help Brock train new generations of young Niagara residents to qualify for well-paid jobs", said Jim Bradley, Minister of Transportation and MPP for St. Catharines.
