NASDAQ Announces January Market Share Performance Statistics
Sets Records in Share Volume and Market Share in All U.S. Securities
Matched Volume in NYSE Securities Increased by over 200 Percent Year over
Year for January

NEW YORK, - The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. announced that its matched volume in all U.S. securities increased by 91%, a record high of 58.9 billion shares in January, as compared with 30.9 billion shares in January 2007. Consolidated volume in all U.S. securities in January was a record 186.4 billion, compared with 111.5 billion in January 2007. NASDAQ's matched market share of all U.S. Equity share volume in January was more than any other U.S. exchange for the tenth consecutive month at a record 31.6%, compared to 27.7% during the same period last year.
In January, NASDAQ's matched volume in NASDAQ-listed securities was a
record 27.3 billion shares, compared to 19.9 billion shares the
previous year. NASDAQ's handled market share in NASDAQ-listed
securities in January was 73.0% (1) and matched market share was 48.3%.
NASDAQ's matched volume in NYSE-listed stocks was a record 21.8 billion
shares in January, an increase from 11.8 billion shares in December
2007 and 8.8 billion shares in January 2007. NASDAQ's total reported
market share in NYSE-listed stocks in January was a record 37.7% (2).
NASDAQ's matched market share in NYSE-listed securities last month was
a record 21.1%, up from 18.3% in December 2007 and 14.9% in January
2007. NASDAQ's handled market share in NYSE-listed securities last
month was 55.7% (3).
"With high levels of market volatility in the month of January, trading
activity was characterized by a flight to safety, and NASDAQ was the
preferred trading venue," said Chris Concannon, Executive Vice
President of NASDAQ.
In January, NASDAQ's systems handled trade volume of over 6 billion
shares daily and routinely handled over 250,000 transactions per
second.
NASDAQ's matched volume in all U.S. ETFs in January was a record 11.6
billion, more than any other U.S. exchange, compared to 5.5 billion the
previous month and 3.0 billion in January 2007. Matched market share of
all U.S. ETF volume last month was a record 39.7%. NASDAQ's total
reported market share of all U.S. ETF volume in January was a record
54.8% (4), with a record 16.0 billion shares being traded compared to
7.9 billion shares the previous month.
Included in NASDAQ's handled and total reported share in January for
all U.S.-listed, NASDAQ-listed, NYSE-listed, and ETF securities are
average daily volumes of 1.6 billion, 555.7 million, 813.4 million, and
209.7 million shares, respectively, reported to the FINRA/NASDAQ Trade
Reporting Facility (5).
