Lecture Series For Teachers

New lecture series for teachers designed to instill excitement about science and technology

WATERLOO REGION - Teachers from across Waterloo Region will gather at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) on Monday, February 25 to hear from two of Canada ' s leading science and technology champions.
David Yach, Chief Technology Officer for Research In Motion, and Dr. Damian Pope, Senior Manager of Scientific Outreach at Perimeter, will speak on separate topics to a gathering of 100 local teachers in the Mike Lazaridis Theatre of Ideas.

In this two-part Science Superheroes inaugural presentation, Mr. Yach will share his experience about pursuing a career in technology. His talk marks the launch of a new program of the Business & Education Partnership of Waterloo Region (BEP). The program is designed to help local teachers instill the excitement of discovery and invention in their students, and to increase enrolments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - also known as STEM disciplines.

Dr. Damian Pope will share insights with a fundamental perspective - where human curiosity drives understanding and fuels innovation - by presenting the first module in the all new " Perimeter Explorations " series of in-class resources for educators.

This enrichment content, available to all high school science teachers in kit form and viewable online, brings abstract scientific ideas to life in highly visual ways using a special combination of DVD, Teacher Notes and Student Worksheets. Dr. Pope says, " The first lesson on ' The Mystery of Dark Matter ' involves one of the hottest topics in science and we ' ll provide participating teachers with all the necessary tools to show students how dark matter was discovered, to explain why it remains a mystery, and to share the passion of theorists and experimentalists who are trying to discover what it ' s made of. "

" We ' re very excited to launch the Science Superheroes program, " says Alayne Hynes, program manager for the BEP, a community partner of Communitech: Waterloo Region Technology Association. " Real-life ' Science Superheroes ' will share their stories with teachers and department heads, helping us to encourage greater exploration and participation from students in STEM career opportunities and entrepreneurship. "

The BEP ' s focus on STEM disciplines is targeted to meet specific skills needs of business and industry. Science Superheroes connects with secondary school administrators, educators, guidance councilors and career specialists in science, mathematics, computer science, engineering, and technology. The program features four lectures over the course of 2008, as well as increased emphasis on STEM in the BEP ' s Speakers Bureau and Business Visitation programs.

The Science Superheroes and Perimeter Explorations event takes place Monday, February 25 from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the Mike Lazaridis Theatre of Ideas at Perimeter Institute, 31 Caroline Street North, Waterloo. The lectures will be followed by a reception for teachers in Perimeter ' s Black Hole Bistro.
