Steelworkers host International Women's Day breakfast on Saturday, March 14, demonstration on EI to follow

OSHAWA/PORT HOPE - A breakfast hosted by the United Steelworkers (USW) to celebrate International Women's Day is being held Saturday, March 14, in Port Hope at the Carpenters' Hall, 459 Croft Street.

Following breakfast in Port Hope from 9-11 a.m., a community-organized demonstration in favour of Employment Insurance (EI) reform will take place in front of the office of Oshawa Member of Parliament, Colin Carrie. The demonstration is scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and is a 30-minute drive from Port Hope.

The annual breakfast is open to everyone. The featured speaker is Marie Kelly, the USW's Assistant Director for Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Kelly is a long-time activist who began her career as a lawyer in the USW legal department. Today, she is involved in major contract bargaining, has taken a key role in bankruptcy situations and restructuring. She also plays a fundamental roll in training and education.

Kelly will speak on the impact of the economic downturn on women.
