Earth Hour
Hydro One supports Earth Hour, every day
TORONTO - Hydro One is proud to support Earth Hour again
this year and is encouraging its customers and employees to reduce their
energy consumption on Saturday, March 28, 2009 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
"Hydro One is proud to participate in this important WWF and global
initiative by reducing lighting at our head office and locations across the
province and by encouraging our employees and customers to participate in
Earth Hour," said Giuliana Rossini, Director, Strategy and Conservation
Officer, Hydro One. "Although many lights at our field locations must remain
on for the safety of the public and our workers, we are taking steps to reduce
electricity use wherever possible."
Hydro One is celebrating Earth Hour every day by taking steps to reduce
its overall energy consumption. Last year, it conducted energy audits and
retrofits at three of its facilities in Ontario with five more building
retrofits planned for this year. Energy retrofits are expected to reduce CO2
air emissions by 400 tonnes annually, representing a savings of more than
600,000 kWh per year.
The Company is also taking steps to minimize the impact of its fleet by
purchasing hybrid vehicles for at least 10 per cent of new light duty vehicle
purchases, installing speed limiters on heavy-duty vehicles and educating
employees on anti-idling and proper tire inflation. Hydro One expects these
campaigns will reduce green house gases by 400,000 kg each year.
Hydro One customers care about conserving electricity too. Since 2005,
they have saved more than 400 million kWh of electricity, a savings of more
than 260,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, through conservation and demand
management programs.
