New Grand River Transit Route 21 Launched in Elmira

Waterloo Region – Regional Chair Ken Seiling and Mayor Bill Strauss officially launched the new Grand River Transit (GRT) Route 21 in Elmira, Township of Woolwich. Started April 6, 2009, the pilot service will run for a one-year trial period.

The service will connect Elmira with the Conestoga Mall transit terminal, including stops in the St. Jacobs’ core, at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market/Outlet Mall and the new Wal-Mart Centre.

"I am thrilled we are finally able to pilot bus service to one of our townships," said Ken Seiling, Regional Chair. “If this is successful, the program can expand to provide a transportation alternative to many in our Townships over time."

Elmira was selected for the pilot service because it has the largest population size of the rural township centres and therefore, has the greatest ridership potential. Results from a survey of Elmira households indicated strong support and willingness to use the pilot transit service.

The extension of transit service to rural township centres provides the opportunity for rural residents to access employment, education and services within the urban area by means other than by car. Similarly, residents in the urban area would have greater access by transit to destinations in rural areas.

“I know the citizens of Elmira are very excited about this new service, said Mayor Bill Strauss. “It will allow them greater mobility without being dependant on a car.”

Ridership will be monitored throughout the year and service frequency and/or hours of operation may be refined.

The pilot service in Elmira represents the initial phase of a rural transit service strategy, which will assist with the planning of future transit services to other rural settlement areas.
